Several days later, as Helia goes about her work, tidying the estate, the events of the past few days still fresh in her mind.
She can't help but steal glances at the ring on her finger, each time a warm feeling of contentment washes over her.
---
In the middle of the afternoon, the usual calm of the estate is overshadowed by an underlying current of agitation.
Whispers of rumors and gossip fill the corridors, and the other staff move about with a sense of urgency.
The sight of the clan members, heavily armed and in a hurry, sparks a sense of unease in her. The weight of their swords, the quick and determined pace they're moving at, it all hints at something serious going down.
The clan members rush by, exchanging words and information, their voices carry snippets of conversation and instructions.
The urgency in their tones and the seriousness in their expressions only heighten the growing sense of worry. Helia gets closer to see better.
The commotion has drawn a small crowd of maids, including Helia. She sees some maids explaining the situation to others, a panicked look on their face.
Helia's decides to ask the maid next to her about what's going on. "Hey, excuse me, do you know what's happening?"
The maid looks around, making sure no one else is listening, then leans in closer to Helia. Her voice drops to a barely audible whisper.
"Haven't you heard? In the beginning of the afternoon, during a meeting gathering the most important people of the clan, Toji barged in and killed them all!"
The words hit Helia like a punch to the gut. She feels her palm starting to sweat, her mind reeling with the implications. The maid continues.
"And after that, he just ran away! No one knows where he is, that's why every member is on the edge. I mean, I can understand, he murdered every elder, even the head of the clan! His own father!"
The maid's revelation has left Helia shaken, as she struggles to process everything.
Of course he would have gone through his plan anyway. It's not because he was tender and nice to her that everything he had gone through had disappeared.
He still has bad habits and maybe he would never be able to get rid of them. But she will not abandon him because of that, she will stay by his side and help him overcome this.
She will never leave him alone with his traumas.
But another though crosses her mind. Was he going to go through with his plan? Was he going to kill everyone in the estate, or will he stop at the elders?
No, according to the maid's words the killing happened in the beginning of the afternoon which was hours ago. If had wanted to kill everyone he would already have done so.
The maid seems to sense Helia's distress, and her expression softens to one of concern. She reaches out to tentatively touch her arm, trying to offer some comfort.
"But don't worry, I'm sure they'll catch him and kill him... He won't hurt anyone else, don't be afraid."
The maid's words are meant to reassure, but they have the opposite effect. The thought of Toji being hunted down, killed possibly, sends a wave of panic and fear through Helia.
Still, she tries to push these thoughts aside, to keep the calm facade all the other maids are so used to see.
Helia nods and murmurs a quiet 'thank you', before quickly breaking away from the gathered crowd of maids, seeking solitude and space to gather her thoughts.
