Beep....Beep...Beep...

It's the first thing I process.

Oh god, my body feels like it was just hit by a train and then was tied to a giant gate, where it was repeatedly slammed by a giant wolf's head with flames coming out of its mouth and eyes.

I try to move, but find that my joints are all locked in place. It takes a lot of will to even move my big toe. But once I move my fingers and toes, it becomes easier and easier to move. I try to speak but it comes out all weird and raspy, more like I'm gasping for air than trying to speak.

Footsteps walk over to me immediately and take my hand. Their hands are rough, calloused, and warm like Dad's. My eyes flutter open to find someone I definitely didn't expect.

"Naan?" My voice is still raspy but gets out his name okay. He's changed a lot since I last saw him. His skin is much tanner, his clothes are finer, and he has a handsome trimmed stubble growing. "Wow. You look way better than I do right now."

His laugh however, hasn't changed a bit. It's higher than his regular voice and cracks a little near the end. Naan shakes his head smiling.

"And even though you're in a literal hospital you're still cracking jokes. You haven't changed a bit, little brother."

"Oh I have," I tell him and adjust my head against the pillow. "I've decided that instead of just cracking jokes, why don't I crack my ribs too?" When I try to wiggle my torso the sharp pain around my lungs and chest stab me, and I retreat back to stillness.

"Yeah, keep it easy, man. You got really fucked up didn't you?" Naan asks, his voice is full of sorrow and regret, much like I've heard in Paratha's. "What happened?"

My lips tighten into a thin line. The weight on my chest is heavy, and I have a feeling it won't go away till I tell somebody about what happened. I tell him everything. Everything except my conversation with Death. That's personal, and I don't feel comfortable sharing that with anyone right now.

Naan doesn't interrupt. He listens intently and makes a few comments every time I pause. When I finish, he takes my right hand again and gives me a small smile.

"I'm so sorry that you've been going through that, Pretzel Bite. And I'm sorry that I've been off traveling the world, leaving you two to deal with her." I shake my head with a smile.

"You don't need to be sorry, Muffina. We understand completely. I mean, if I were you I'd have been doing the exact same thing. I really don't understand how Paratha was able to stick it out here when he didn't have to."

"While I'm sure it must have been hard, it was the right thing to do. We're brothers. We're supposed to stick by each other's sides." Naan pulls his hands away and turns his attention to his fidgeting thumbs. "It's been on my mind a lot lately. I've had a tendency to run from things, and I think that, now, I want to change that. I'm gonna find a place to settle down in, and I'm gonna commit."

"That's great, Naan. I'm so proud of you, and I think he would be too." Naan looks up at me with tears in his eyes and a smile. The door opens and a doctor along with Paratha step in.

"You're up!" Paratha exclaims and rushes to my side. Having both of my brothers here is like a present. A big amazing present. Maybe a parting farewell gift from Death. Speaking of which.
