Smoke and Mirrors Ent., Old Building
Minho sat down on the worn wooden floor of the small practice room, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. The air was thick with the smell of sweat, and the muffled hum of traffic outside did little to break the intense quiet that followed their rigorous practice. He wiped his face with the hem of his shirt before accepting the water bottle Wei silently offered him, nodding in thanks.
Wei, as usual, was unreadable. Ever since they had started training together, Minho had been curious about his stoic nature. Wei moved with precision, danced with passion, but kept his emotions tightly controlled. Minho often wondered what was going on inside his head. Was this just Wei's way of keeping cool, or was there something deeper behind his reserved demeanor? Either way, Minho found it oddly comforting—Wei's silence was like an anchor in the chaos of their uncertain journey.
"We should take a break, guys." Jaehyun's voice cut through the stillness. He stood by the door, his hair sticking to his forehead from the intensity of their training. "I need to talk to Minhyuk-hyung about some stuff. I'll be right back."
Jaehyun, the self-appointed leader of the group, had taken on the role naturally. His energy was contagious, and his ability to lift everyone's spirits even when things looked bleak made him indispensable. Minho liked him a lot—Jaehyun had the charisma and determination needed to lead them through the uncertainty ahead. But there was always the looming question of their missing member.
Where was the fourth piece of their puzzle?
Minho leaned back against the wall, his gaze drifting to the cracked ceiling. The longer it took to find their final member, the heavier the doubts weighed on his mind. Could they even debut without a complete lineup? And even if they did, would anyone care? They were training under a small, unknown company, barely scraping by with the barest of resources. Who would take a chance on them?
That eerie feeling of uncertainty gnawed at him again. He tried to push it down, but it lingered in the corners of his mind like a shadow.
"I know what you're thinking," Wei's quiet voice broke through Minho's thoughts. Minho blinked, surprised. Wei rarely spoke unless it was necessary.
"What?" Minho replied, turning his head toward him.
"About whether we'll make it," Wei said simply, his eyes still fixed on the floor as he leaned against the mirrored wall. "Whether we'll ever debut."
Minho swallowed, caught off guard by how easily Wei had read him. "You think about it too?"
"We all do. Sometimes, I wonder if I should've never left home. Maybe I'd have a better future there," Wei shrugged, his expression still impassive. "But worrying won't get us anywhere."
Minho let out a sigh. "I guess you're right... But it's hard not to think about it, you know? We've been working so hard, and it feels like we're stuck."
Wei looked at him for a moment before replying, "We're not stuck. We're just waiting for the right time."
Minho raised an eyebrow. "You really believe that?"
Wei's gaze flickered to the door Jaehyun had just walked out of. "If Jaehyun believes it, I do too."
Minho nodded slowly, contemplating Wei's words. Despite Wei's reserved nature, there was a quiet confidence in his voice that was hard to ignore. It reminded Minho that they weren't in this alone. They had each other, and somehow, that had to be enough for now.
Before he could say anything else, the door to the practice room creaked open again. Minho expected to see Jaehyun returning, but instead, it was Minhyuk-hyung, their manager, who entered. Behind him trailed a figure Minho didn't recognize.
