Kate was now sitting across from Bri Lewerke, who was still confused. Kate was sat in the Lewerke living room, and she took a second to soak in the put together and simple look of their living room. It was artsy to an extent, but also so so modern. Kate decided to break the silence, after Bri brought the two glasses of water.
"I know you're mad, and I'm glad you let me come in. I wanted to talk to you, about..." started Kate, and Bri understood, giving the nervous girl a nod after a sip of water.
"Go ahead, Kate," said Bri, with a comforting smile which confused Kate. Bri was only being very open and kind as she was still good friends with Kate and the poor girl looked like she could shatter out of nervousness soon.
"Please don't be mad at her. If anything, you should be really pissed at me," started Kate, her shaky voice in a ramble. "I'm the one who suggested keeping it a secret and on the down low. Not Kaci."
"Do you really love my sister?"
That was all Bri asked in response to Kate's mini ramble. It made Kate pause. Not out of hesitation, but out of surprise. Out of all things she could have responded, she went with that. Kate was baffled, but carried on with her genuine response.
"Yes, of course," replied Kate, with a serious tone of defiance. "I really do."
"You know, I really love her too. And I want to protect her," started Bri.
"Yeah, I do too," said Kate quickly, which made Bri chuckle a bit. Her nerves were just on display a little too much now.
"But what I wanted to protect her from was you."
"Huh?" said Kate, mouth slightly open and her eyebrows furrowed. Bri simply smiled.
"Not specifically you,but athletes in general. Athletes that are going to grow and get famous, and have the world on their shoulders because of their exposure. They hold expectations of the public," said Bri, which made Kate laugh pathetically. Kate thought after Iowa, there wasn't much left for her.
"Well, I highly doubt I will get any attention after Iowa, Bri," chuckled Kate, which Bri shrugged with a smile.
"You never know missy," laughed Bri, making Kate smile. "What I was saying was that I don't want her to get hurt like people have with athletes. Not a diss to you, but athletes tend to be toxic."
The comment brought the two into laughter, even through the serious conversation they were having.
"Nah, I know what you mean, though," said Kate. "But I promise, I'm not trying to be toxic at all. I'm not playing Kaci or luring her in just to humiliate her. That's just...disgusting to me. I genuinely care for and love her."
"I'm glad you do, Kate," smiled Bri. "I can't be mad at you for loving my sister. I can't stop it, I couldn't stop you two. And it's foolish of me to even try and keep my sister from falling in love and all that."
Kate warmed up with comfort, she was happy that Bri was slowly peeling away with at least an ounce of acceptance.
"So, I'm sorry that you two even felt so uncomfortable to not tell me or be public," said Bri sincerely. "I'm going to talk to Kaci when she gets home, but I'm glad I had a separate talk with you, Kate. Just, promise to take care of her?"
Kate nodded with a smile, her eyes twinkling with happiness that they cleared things up.
"I promise more than that."
