chapter twenty three : mushy peas and pearls
she hadn't wanted to eat. she didn't want to go downstairs and sit with her piers and chat about what they had gotten up to over the term. she had felt everything at once but simultaneously nothing at all. the urge and desire to eat and drink had completely washed over her and was no where to be found.
she'd decided to have the first day off and stay in the dorm. it felt almost melancholic but she just couldn't shake the feeling of being unwanted. why hadn't he came down? pondering to herself, going over every detail or possible explanation as to why he was a no show. maybe he was just tired last night, but even so he usually made the effort to have a ten minute conversation before going to bed. every single night since the start of the year without fail they had a nightly conversation in the common room, and first night back he couldn't even show up?
he had been weird with her throughout the whole day. the train ride there, the station, even in the great hall that night he hadn't spoke to her once. she was going to confront him, ask why he didn't come. night grew and the common room became busier and busier, she had waited for him to return to the dormitory all day but he hadn't appeared once. a few people were laying on the couches or sat infront of the fire, everyone talking about their day and tomorrow. "blaise.. do you know where draco is?" sapphire asked blaise
him and fortis were sat at a chess table in the middle of a game, fortis didn't seem to notice her, his lips were pursed and his eyes were concentrating on the board. "oh, erm. no, ask daphne. i think they were together before? i don't know, that's just what i got told" he raised his hand defensively. sapphires eyebrows furrowed her lips formed into a frown, as if she was exchanging a dirty look "oh?" she growled. fortis raised his eyes to look at blaise, the two looked at eachother as if they were thinking the same thing. his lips curved into a grin, "ooo, she's mad" he cackled, causing her to roll her eyes and walk off.
thinking to herself, she wasn't bothered by him being with daphne green grass. it was just confusion. the pair had never spoke, ever. so why now do they decide to be friends. it was just stupidity, it baffled her.
she stood next to the fire, the luminous orange sunlight glow highlighting her face. she bit her nails, her eyes only focusing on the flame. almost like on cue, draco entered the common room. her angry and spiteful look slowly began to disappear upon seeing him. he entered the common room with a big smile on his face, a radiant glow upon him. he made his way over to fortis and blaise, she could hear them talking about daphne. raising an eyebrow, she attempted to hear as much as she could without making her way over.
the noise of the other students made it difficult but not impossible to earwig. she heard their murmurs in little blurs, the words 'beautiful' and 'soon' being passed around. she couldn't quite understand what it meant, occasionally she'd hear the sound of them dabbing eachother up and a classic lad cheer but nothing else notable. until, she heard her name thrown into the mixture. when her name was spoken all three of the lads looked towards her instantly, making them realise she had been listening due to her odd stance and her hair tucked behind a singular ear. her eyes widening and she slowly backing away until out of sight, then running as fast as she could up the stairs.
pansy was sat on her bed, filling her nails, the aroma of an open bottle of nail polish filling the air. sapphire jumped onto pansy's bed, shaking her until she blurted out a "what!" in shock. "why has draco been with daphne green grass ALL DAY" sapphire spat in annoyance. she let out a groan before standing up and pacing around the room, her blood was boiling and her face was crimson. "oh god, what's happened." pansy asked, placing the nail file on her bedside table and beginning to listen. "right so" she began to speak rapidly, the words practically flying off the tip of her tongue "draco's weird with me on the train but i'm thinking like it's fine he's just tired or something. next thing you know, he doesn't come downstairs for our nightly chat? like, what!"
"he didn't go down for ur nightly chat?" pansy questioned, releasing a gasp and covering her mouth in shock. saph nodded before continuing to nod in recognition. "so then, i'm like what the fuck. and anyways i ask blaise where he is, turns out he's been with daphne greengrass all day?! he comes in the common room, doesn't even look at me, starts whispering to blaise and fortis about something. THEN, they all look at me at the same time which was so so so creepy, and start whispering about me. and, i don't even know but why is he with daphne green grass" she released a breathe that she hadn't had throughout talking. within the final word her eyes began to water, her throat shaky and legs began to buckle. she couldn't help but begin to sob into pansys arms, who had made her way over upon seeing her cry.
her crys were violent and grim, she had a tight grip on pansy who could only stroke her head in reassurance and comfort. "sapphire, listen to me. daphne greengrass is a cheap slag. she's ugly and has no personality at all, they won't last five minutes. i promise."
sapphire giggled slightly. her face proceeded to drop and she couldn't help but begin to sob once again. "but she's not ugly and neither does she have no personality, that's the thing. she's lovely and funny, i totally get why he likes her. it's just the fact he's ignoring me, for her? that's why it's annoyed me. i would've never have done this to him. out of the blue as well?" pansy held her even closer, curling strands of her golden hair inbetween her bony fingers. "but she's not you." she whispered.
