THE clock read 12:01, and Alice hurried down the stairs as quietly as possible. She could be quiet if she needed to be after all.
Alice let her fingers twist the doorknob open and slip through the small crack it made. When she shut it, she was sure it had creaked loud enough for her father to hear, but he didn't. She took a look around and walked into the night.
The moon wasn't very bright, and she had to get on the other side of this fence. The fence that surrounded their mansion was made of brick about a foot taller than her, and then black fence at the top. She had to get over it.
Alice put trust into every muscle in her body for what she was about to do next. She reached her arms up as high as she could, reaching the top of the brick and pulled her body up. After that, it was only the swift motion of her leg and jumping down onto the grass below. She landed on the tip of her toes and fingers and stood up.
Alice walked over to the sidewalk and then splashed onto the road, where she walked straight into darkness.
She felt firm hands wrap around her arm. This time, she didn't struggle or scream; she knew the owner of them as they led her into the alley.
When they'd stood there quietly for minutes, he turned his head to her. Alice could barely see his face. Their only source of light was the moon.
"What is it?" He whispered, leaning in to hear her.
"I told you I got permission to enter the ball. But we have a problem." Alice paused, and he nodded, telling her it was okay. "He wants me to go with David."
His eyes widened, and then he crossed his arms, a pensive finger on his face. He nodded.
"Can you not convince him otherwise?"
"I don't know. I think they have some sort of partnership. I just need to convince him you're a more..." Alice looked at the dirty blonde man with a leather jacket. He gave her wide eyes that said, "What! Go on!" And she did. "Wealthy. I need to get you a tailored suit and style to hair..." Alice tapped her finger. "Do you know how to dance?"
He looked at her blankly.
"I'll teach you to dance and.. well." Alice looked at him. "I guess we have a lot of work to do."
