Brielle Davis
I fumbled with my fingers as I waited for Chris at the bus stop, per usual. I kept peering behind me to see if he would show up, but I lost my patience and decided to play a game or two on my phone. Digging in my pocket furiously, my fingers finally found their way to the soft plastic case. Once I finally managed to get a hold of my phone, I began to enter my passcode, only to be interrupted by slow footsteps coming my way.
"Well hello to you too." I mumbled underneath my breath. Chris just cleared his throat before meeting my eyes and speaking a soft 'Hey.'
There was an awkward silence between us before the bus pulled up near the sidewalk. I nudged Chris with my elbow, motioning towards the large yellow vehicle before he snapped out of his lost gaze and followed me on the bus.
I inhaled the musky odor of the old bus before plopping down next to him and letting out a sigh. Something was off.
"Why aren't you talking to me? If it's about the kiss-" I was quickly interrupted as he looked towards me.
"No, that's not it. It's nothing, really. Sorry if I made you feel bad or somethin'..." He trailed off and looked back down.
"Oh okay."
Something was up, and I had to find out what it was. Every time he looked into my eyes, I could feel his hurt. It sent chills down my spine. He always opened up to me, but this time was different. Hey, maybe it'll blow over by the end of the day.

I set down my bookbag at the base of my locker as I took a look around the school. One more week school will finally be over. I'll be able to hang out with Chris for as long as I want, not to mention I'll be one week closer to school ending.
My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of girls laughing nearby. I slowly turned around, only to see Chris flirting with them. A part of me didn't care since we were just friends, but another part of me hated it, especially the way Lexi had him wrapped around her finger. Lexi was one of my ex- friends. We were close up until last year when she ditched me and changed completely. I scoffed loudly and shoved the rest of my materials into my locker just as the bell rang. Crap, I'm late.
First period went by slowly, as usual. I doodled in my notebook to pass the time as Ms. Fox rambled about calculus.
"Miss Davis?" Ms. Fox questioned as she snatched my notebook off of my desk.
"Yes ma'am?"
"I've been calling on you for 5 minutes. Please answer question six."
I gulped before speaking. "Oh, um... The answer is the derivative of 3,"
"Correct. Now please quit doodling and pay attention." She spoke strictly, earning giggles from some students in the back of the classroom.
After an additional 45 minutes of torture, the bell finally rang. I huffed and shoved my textbook into my binder as I made my way back down the hall towards my locker.
"Bri... Bri. Briiii!" Amber yelled as she frantically waved her hand in front of my face.
I met Amber in 6th grade and she's honestly one of my best friends... Besides Chris, of course.
"Sorry I'm just out of it today." Amber's eyes widened once I mentioned how I felt.
"Talk to me."
I nervously tapped my foot before continuing. "It's noth-"
"Actually, it's time for lunch. C'mon, we can talk in the cafeteria." Amber interrupted as she yanked me by my wrist to the cafeteria. After we both decided on some watered down salads, we sat in our normal spot near the window. Amber just looked at me intently, waiting for me to continue.
"Talk." Amber spoke as she prodded me with her fork.
"Oh yeah. It's nothing. Today is just off... Also, you have spinach in your teeth."
Amber wiped her mouth hurriedly before looking at me for approval. I nodded, signifying that the pesky green leaf wasn't there anymore.
"Okay. Are you sure you don't feel bad? Because I could always call Chris over here to give you a hug or-"
"Don't. I mean- I'm fine."
Amber raised a brow at my rushed response, but shrugged it off. After a boring conversation filled with lots of 'yup's and 'okay's, lunch was almost over and I wasn't feeling any better. I just needed to know why Chris was so- weird.
My thoughts were interrupted by Amber, who must've caught on to the fact I was thinking about him.
"So, when is he gonna cuff yo ass?" she spoke excitedly, winking for emphasis. My cheeks turned red as I struggled to answer. Usually, I would start with an 'ew, no' but honestly, I didn't know how to respond.
"Uh... Lunch is over. See you later..." I rushed, tossing my tray in the trash and heading back to the door. Amber stopped me by the door frame and continued.
"We have the same class next. Plus, you didn't answer my question."
I tried my best not to smile as I spoke quietly. "It's complicated."
"Yeah, especially since he's been all up on Lex for the past month. People are saying they're a thing now,"Amber shrugged.
My heart stopped as I replayed her words in my mind. "Yeah... Um, we should get to class now."
I felt betrayed and hurt at the same time, not to mention he didn't even bother to tell me. We were just friends after all, and that's all it would ever be.
"Bri?" Amber repeated for the third time, snapping me out of my thoughts. "We have to get to class, remember?"
"Yeah I'm- let's go." I replied glumly.
