Lena looked around as they started to walk away from the old falling apart building they had camped out in.

“It's like a fucked up moon.” Ellie said, looking down at the giant crater in the ground, following behind Tess.

“Is this where they bombed?” Lena asked, walking up behind Ellie, peering down into the hole.

“Yeah, they hit most of the big cities like this,” Tess explained “They had to slow the spread somehow.” the older woman looked down in the giant crater, holding the steps of her bag

“Yeah and how well did that work?”Alaska scoffed

“It worked here. But not other places,” Tess  said, narrowing her eyes at him, Alaska rolled his eyes and walked ahead of them. They slowed to a stop at the end of the road, staring straight at the block on their path to the state house. A giant building had collapsed and fallen to rubble blocking the road that led right to the place they needed to get to. “So, the state house is across from there. It's about a ten minute walk if we could go straight.” Tess said, pointing ahead.

“So? What's the problem?” Ellie asked, looking up at her.

“Long way or short way?” Joel asked with a sigh., staring at the issue ahead.

“I mean, its the long way or the were fuckin dead way.” Tess added

“Well I vote the long way. Just based on that limited information.” Ellie nodded looking up at Tess before at Joel.

“Yeah, I hate walking but I'd rather walk than get eaten alive.” Lean said, gripping the straps of her bag, her lip pressed into a line.

“I agree with them,” Alaska nodded, with an annoyed sigh.

“Well, I have to check it from the hotel first.” Joel told looking between his son and tess.

“Okay,” Tess nodded before starting to walk, Alaska looked towards his father who nodded in the direction Tess went. The boy sighed again and walked past him, ushering the two teenagers to walk in front of him.

They walked through the abandoned car-filled highway bridge in silence. The only sound was the scrapping of shoes against the broken asphalt. “Where the fuck are they?”Ellie asked, breaking the eerie silence of the dead city, walking  behind Alaska

“You'll know when they're close,” the older woman responded walking ahead, her hands gripping her straps of her bag still, her eyes staying forward.

“I didn’t know last time.”Ellie muttered

“Scary fuckers, that for sure” Alaska added, looking overhis shoulder, making Ellie nodded in agreement.
