Light's POV
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the Task Force headquarters. The tension in the air was palpable, but to me, it was a silent, steady pulse—a reminder of the delicate balance I maintained in this game of life and death.
It had been days since my last encounter with L, but the weight of our conversation lingered like a shadow in the back of my mind. L's suspicions were growing, and I knew with every passing moment, my margin for error shrank. I couldn't afford another slip—not when L was so close to uncovering the truth.
The plan I'd set in motion was working—on the surface, at least. L had taken the bait, redirecting the Task Force's attention just as I'd intended. But it wasn't enough. I could feel his presence, looming over me like a specter. His constant, unnerving gaze made my heart race, even though I never let it show.
Even as L appeared to follow my lead, there was a new tension in the Task Force's operations. L's movements were calculated, deliberate, as if he was trying to draw out something—anything—that could confirm his suspicions about me. It was a dangerous game of cat and mouse, and I knew that the slightest misstep could mean the end of everything I'd worked for.
But a new plan was forming in my mind—bolder, riskier than anything I'd ever devised. It was audacious, but it might be the only way to throw L off my trail once and for all. I needed to regain control, to push L into a corner where his options were limited, where he had no choice but to reveal his hand.
As I considered my next move, a soft knock interrupted my thoughts. I looked up to see my father, standing in the doorway. His face was lined with exhaustion, the weight of the Kira case evident in his tired eyes.
"Light, do you have a moment?" he asked, his voice weary but firm.
"Of course," I replied, masking my inner turmoil with a calm demeanor.
He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. The click of the latch echoed in the quiet room as he walked over to my desk, placing a thick file on the polished wood.
"This just came in," he said, nodding toward the file. "L wants us to go over it together."
My eyes flickered with curiosity as I reached for the file. "Did he say why?"
My father shook his head. "No, but it's clear he's getting more involved with the day-to-day operations. He's focusing on every detail now, Light. I think he's onto something."
I forced a smile. "That's what we need, right? L's attention to detail could be what finally cracks this case."
He nodded, but there was a shadow of doubt in his eyes. "I suppose. But I can't shake the feeling that something's different. L's never been this... hands-on before."
I knew exactly why L was so involved—because he was closing in, narrowing his suspicions. And that's why I needed to act quickly. The more L saw, the more dangerous the situation became.
As we began reviewing the file together, my mind raced, calculating my next step. The information in front of me was crucial, but it wasn't the data that concerned me. It was the strategy—the careful dance L and I were engaged in. One wrong move, and the entire game could come crashing down.
We worked in silence, the only sounds the rustling of papers and my father's occasional sigh. But my thoughts were miles away, considering the one variable I hadn't accounted for: what if L knew more than he was letting on?
A sudden realization hit me—L's approach had changed subtly over the past few days. He'd been more direct, more probing, as if trying to provoke a reaction. I knew I needed to be cautious, but I also needed to take control. L's new strategy was dangerous, and if I didn't respond, I risked losing the upper hand.
