Chancellor Ava Paige sat at the desk in her office at The WICKED Safehouse. They had built the place just in case the normal headquarters were ever to be under attack. And right now, that was exactly what was happening. She stood opposite to a screen, examining it carefully as the screen showed The Gladers, running toward The Flat Trans. It showed The WICKED Headquarters, turning to dust in the hands of The Right Arm.
She sighed as she got up to turn the screen off. She just couldn't watch her life's work, burn to ashes like that. She closed her hand on top of the off button, but just before she pressed, something in the corner of her eye caught her attention. It was a girl, being crushed to death by the debris. At first she didn't recognize her, but with a closer look she saw that it was Deedee. The girl who had been with WICKED from the very beginning. She and Thomas were the ones who had employed new people to the project when the original Creators had died.
An awful twinge of guilt hit her then. She had seen enough kids die in these trials. She couldn't bear to see yet another one. And this particular little girl was the only Subject she ever shared a bond with. She was the one who had helped her take place as Chancellor. She was the one who had believed in these Trials more than anyone.
"But what can I do?" she thought to herself. She had to think. She knew that the girl didn't have much time. Her eyes searched all over the screen. The smoke and ash that had come to fill the air suddenly blocked her vision. But she could still see three silhouettes left in the room. Two of which were half dragging and half carrying the other towards the Flat Trans. She understood right away that it was Thomas they were dragging forward. And through the haze of dust she could barely make out the faces of Brenda and Minho, clearly struggling to get him back to safety.
"Safety." The Chancellor thought. And immediately after, her mind started to match everything together. "The Flat Trans!" she thought wildly. She waited for the last three people to finally get through the Trans. And without losing any more time, she walked to the controls on her office wall. Without hesitation she pressed the buttons on the keypad. And when she was done, she made the quickest of glances toward the screen, to see a slight figure disappear into The Trans.* * *
Teresa woke up to brightness. Her eyes burning from the incoming light. Her whole body ached. She tried to move but her body was so sore that she couldn't do much as move a finger. After awhile she gave up on trying to move and just lay there. Willing her eyes to adapt to the brightness. "Where am I?" she thought. She knew for a fact that this place wasn't Heaven. If it where, she wouldn't be aching and drowning in pain. Her heart was beating in the same rhythm as the drumming in her head. She closed her eyes in an attempt to calm down. She could feel her heartbeat, steadying as she breathed in and out.
She was finally beginning to relax. When all of a sudden someone held her hand. She screamed in terror as she opened her eyes. She was expecting a demon or a monster. But all she saw was Aris, clearly frightened by her horror filled screams.
"Teresa calm down!" he shouted, much louder than she ever thought humanly possible. She gasped in a gulp of air, as he helped her get back to her feet.
"Where are we?" she asked, terror clearly visible in her tone. She looked around, her brain trying desperately to figure out where they were.
"It's okay," he said. "We're in a Flat Trans." She looked at him puzzled. "A Flat Trans? To where?" Aris looked worried. He cleared his throat before answering: "I don't know."
Another thing accured to Teresa then. If this was a Flat Trans it would have transported them somewhere. And since they were in the middle of nowhere then something was clearly wrong with it. She turned toward Aris. "If this is a Flat Trans," she looked around. " Then why hasn't it taken us anywhere?" Aris looked down at his feet as if he knew she was going to ask that. With an apologetic expression he answered: " I think because someone has closed it on the other side."
