"But daddy, I'm scared!"
Newt's voice beamed through the village. He was tugging at Thomas' shirt, trying to lure him away from the crowd in front of The Med-Jack Building.
Thomas stopped and crouched next to Newt, now staring at him right in the eyes. His voice was calm, assuring. He cupped Newt's cheeks in his hands, and smiled.
"Newt it's okay." he whispered. "Your mother and I are both immune." His voice was firm, determined. "The odds of you being the opposite," he scowled, trying not to imagine what that would mean. He quickly forced the smile back on his face and spoke calmly.
"Would be nearly impossible." he finished. Newt cringed at the word nearly. His teeth were chattering and his face was devoid of color. "What if I'm not like them?" he thought. "What if The Flare gets me?"
Still, he tried to look brave for the sake of his father. He was worried enough with his friend Teresa coming back, he didn't want to cause him any more trouble.
"Okay, daddy." Newt said finally. He held his fathers hand and walked through the doors and into the crowded line of The Med-Jack Building.

When The Gladers and other Munies had come through The Trans all those years ago, The Med-Jacks of The Glade and the various doctors and scientists of The other Munies, had decided that each year, towards the end of summer, every child at the age of five would be taken in for examination. Too see if they were immune to The Flare or not.
This year was Newt's turn. He had waited anxiously for this all year. He was scared, nervous. And he would have thrown up if he had eaten anything that day.
The line in front of the building grew shorter, quickly. Newt looked over at the people on the front row. He saw kids hugging their parents goodbye with tear-streaked faces. When it was finally his turn, Thomas hugged him and ruffled his hair. "Don't worry, buddy, it's going to be fine." For the first time since they'd gotten there, Newt saw that his dad was as nervous as he was. He tried not to notice it and replied:
"Okay daddy."

The room was painted a dark blue, with silver stars floating around. The doctors wore green lab-coats and white masks. Newt winced as the doctor in the middle connected the syringe with his arm. He tried to busy himself with other things to calm down. He looked at the silver stars floating around all over the room. They were probably designed to keep the kids busy while the doctors worked. Newt watched as some of the stars started changing color. He was so caught up in watching that he didn't hear when the doctor told him he could go. He looked at his arm to see the bandage covering the spot where the doctor had taken blood. He got up, looked around and finally closed the door behind him.

The next day Thomas went to The Med-Jack Building to visit Teresa. She was doing well, for someone who had been crushed by a rock. But the advanced technology WICKED had left for them had easily healed her broken bones. She just had to rest in The Med-Jacks a little longer to see if she had any damage left.
She was always happy about Thomas' visits. They sat together on her bed and talked about their mischievous behavior back in WICKED. They laughed and cried together, just like old times.
Thomas had just gotten out the door to Teresa's room when Zart: One of The Med-Jacks back in The Glade pulled him over to talk.
He looked sad for some reason and he couldn't quite meet Thomas' eyes.
"What's wrong?" Thomas asked him. He sighed as if he just wanted to pour the words out of his chest. He finally looked at him, ignoring Thomas' puzzled face. He looked down at his feet and handed him a fresh-looking file. He took a step back as Thomas opened it.
"Thomas, man... I'm so sorry." Thomas' heart began to rocket in his chest. He opened the file to see a picture of Newt. He looked cute as ever. His long dark hair over his eyes and the freckles in his smiling face.
Thomas read the words written on the paper carefully and felt his heart contract.

Thomas threw the file to the ground. He ran past Zart, who was standing there in shock. He ran through the corridors of the building, trying to find the exit. The nurses and doctors around the corridors looked at him in surprise. He ignored them and threw himself through the entrance doors, running towards the safety of the woods. He wouldn't have stopped if it weren't for the branch on the ground. He fell face-first onto the floor, and felt the twigs cut through his face and cheeks. But the pain didn't matter to him. The only thing that was going through his mind was that Newt wasn't immune.
Newt wasn't immune...
