Rangers came down from ropes in the ceiling to assist the guards already barraging us with their bullets. One of the older girls had tossed heavy assault rifles to Lynn, me, and a blonde girl that came to the lab with us. I'd only ever used a large rifle like this one once before during a training session held by The Army, and I wasn't very good at it. I considered myself to be a whole lot better with close-combat weapons rather than a gun.
The young kids I'd tagged along with, were using their peculiar abilities to round up the rest of the child experiments, in an attempt to salvage anybody they could from their ambushed rescue mission.
The guards encroached on us further, trying to eliminate all of those who wanted to interfere with the Monarch's plans. Others were roughly dragging the slower kids who were unable to make it over to us, back into the pods where they had originally escaped from.
The one who had introduced himself as Arlo, shouted above the gunfire. Barely.
"Come on!" He shouted. "We have to go! Everyone!"
All of the kids nodded in agreement, and we gradually backed our way towards the large, steel sliding door where we had come in.Arlo and a younger girl with stark white hair pried open the metal sliding door and we started shoving as many kids into the door as possible.
I felt bullets graze my arm, calf, and back, staining my black clothes with patches of red while tearing through the fabric of my shirt. I pushed through the pain and kept my gun focused on our attackers, taking out many in the process, but no matter how many fell to our weapons, twice as many replaced those who had fallen.
Once everyone we could manage got behind the steel door, a girl who looked strangely familiar to me, and I forcefully closed the door, but the Rangers bullets were still wracking the door from the other side.
By now, the entire place was in lockdown, so the previously open gates were now sealed closed, trapping all of us in the little room in between them.
"What are we going to do?" Evie moaned as she held her hands over her ears to cover the noise.
A boy with short, dusty blonde hair who was standing a little too close to her responded to her.
"Melody always has a plan. She'll come up with something."
Melody?
Why was that name so familiar?
It couldn't be her.
The girl who had given me the rifle stepped forward. "And I do." She lifted a small boy onto her back with flaming red hair, and gestured to the bars we were trapped behind. "Sable, you're up."
A little brown-skinned boy stepped timidly out of the group, and approached the metal bars. He took a deep breath, and started biting at the metal.
My jaw dropped as I witnessed the boy eating the metal bars, and creating a path out of us.
The banging on the door grew louder, and light was starting to come through a crack made in the door. But the boy who was standing next to Evie quickly reacted, and blasted the door with a stream of ice, sealing us inside, and the Rangers out.
"Sable?" He asked. "Work a little faster please."
"I'm trying!" Sable said through crunches of steel he was biting through.
The banging on the door was relentless now, as the guards on the other side were attempting to break through. The escapees were in tears and crying, and the kids who came to rescue them were trying hopelessly to comfort them.
After what felt like an eternity, Sable made a big enough hole for us to fit through. We hurriedly pushed kids through, and started running through the cobblestone corridors. Making countless twists and turns, but we eventually arrived at a ladder that led up to a trap door.
