I tied the black masks behind our heads and pulled them over our noses, I grabbed our bag of essentials that Cora had prepared earlier, and we all stepped out onto the building's rickety fire escape.

As much as I hate to admit it, the Monarch's Sector was beautiful at night. The Monarch's Palace and the courthouse we were in earlier today, both glistening white. While the shops and living quarters were all different shades of gray.

Mother had told me when I was younger, that the reason for it was because the Monarch views his citizens as "Imperfect" or "Dirty", but a light shone in every window signaling a life was living inside.

The Monarch's Sector is the only Sector with working electricity. Every other Sector uses candles or oil lamps.

Being the richest sector, and the one he lives in, it only seemed appropriate that this is where the Monarch would spend the majority of his money, and instead of there being the typical fence around the Sector, there was a massive, stone, wall.

I turned to my cousins.

"You are to do exactly as I say. Understand me?" I ordered them. "If I tell you to run, you run. If I tell you to leave me, you will do so. Got it?"

The three of their heads nodded in agreement, but in their eyes were glistening with tears.

I sighed and kneeled down to them. "What's wrong?"

"We don't want to leave." Cora whimpered.

"Yeah." Alex agreed.

"We lived here our whole lives." Emmett whispered. "We aren't exactly ready to leave."

They are literally being hunted by the Rangers and they still don't want to leave.

"Well I'm sorry you don't want to leave," I start. "But if you stay here, you will die. At least if we leave, we have a chance of surviving."

They all looked at each other, with a look of determination in their eyes.

"Ok." Alex said. "Let's go."

We started our way down the rickety fire escape, being careful not to make any noise. We went all the way down, floor by floor, until I helped Cora onto the smooth asphalt in the alleyway.

The streets were eerily empty. The Monarch had enacted a curfew in all of the Sectors since the rumors of Rebellion started. There used to be parties that went late into the night, and shops that were open through the night. The Sector would never sleep. Now the only things on the streets are the Rangers patrolling the streets. Completely dressed in black, like a panther, ready to kill anybody on site. Without hesitation.

Likewise, the three of us were also wearing black, and I was armed with a knife I always kept on my belt.

And I wouldn't hesitate to defend ourselves either.

The four of us soundlessly weaved in and out of the dark alleyways, folding seamlessly into the night. I thought we were doing a great job of staying quiet. Especially the kids who were usually loud and had a hard time staying quiet.

We went block after block without a problem.

We got closer and closer to the wall surrounding the city. Past the Courthouse, past the Penitentiary, past closed bakeries and shops, making our way through the dark alleyways and empty streets.

But one of the alleys near the wall, a Ranger seemed to melt out of the wall, grabbed Cora, and dragged her into the street, where more Rangers were waiting. They seized both Alex and Emmett, and started to cuff them up.
