Hero Chapter 2: Dazzling Hero (Arthur Calibur)

As we separate from Hunter and Ron... Rook walks up to me,

"So, I've been wondering, why is the number one hero of Sync following a random nobody?"

"Aha... Well, I've been getting stressed over being a hero and all—"

Dante walks past me with a yawn, "What utter bullshit, heroism is something you want, not need to. If you think stressing over being a hero is hard, you should have never become one in the first place—"

Rook smacks Dante, "Sorry if his behavior is rude, he means well but his words can be a bit much... But... he isn't entirely wrong, why did you become a hero in the first place?"

"Oh I–"

Rook points, "oh sorry, we're going to traverse by train, since Hunter took the only car we have... have some thought while we walk there."

The three of us walked... Why did I become a hero? Was it because of the fame I would get? Or was it because something righteous like the happiness of saving others... No... No, I'm neither of the two... There must be something to why I became a hero... But... But why am I drawing blanks!

We arrived at the train station, then heading in we sat at the far corner, as Rook sits in front of me,

"So... Arthur Calibur... I'll ask again... Why did you become a hero?"

That question again... why... why...

I sighed, "I... I don't know..."

Dante leans back, "I became a hero to get easy bread... saving others were a second priority—"

Rook smacks his head, "you be quiet."

"Ah..."

Rook turns back to me, "It's fine if you don't know... I didn't become a hero because it felt like being a hero, tied down with the responsibility of the people around you..."

"What do..."

Rook smiles, "Arthur, what you are going through, Hunter went through the exact same phase. Being number one you are held on a pedestal, like the old theory says, it's a fantasy to put all hopes into one individual... which is why other hero groups try to remedy that situation."

I nod, "Right... like how Solomon Company uses teams, and Psyker only works in certain areas."

"However, Sync is a traditional hero organization, just because some theories suggest we shouldn't pin our hopes on one guy who won't change their philosophy."

"That much is obvious, since Sync was created alongside the heroes who fought with Goddess Hemera."

Rook looks out the window, "being number one felt like that, everyones dreams, hopes and their happiness was the pressure Hunter felt, when he failed to save people during the second great crisis and while it officially said he retired, he was actually fired by the government, because he couldn't do the one job a hero should do. Protecting civilians."

"Protecting... Civilians..."

Rook looked back at me, "no wonder he only relied on himself during his time at Sync... the values of protecting someone was hard for him to do, with another person by his side."

Protecting, and the hopes and dreams...that's right... twelve years ago... During the second crisis... I saw Hunter destroy the villains left and right in front of my Tv screen... I wanted to be...

I start giggling, as Rook looks at me confused,

"Was it something I said?"

I looked down, "No, I think I remember why I wanted to become a hero... But the thought of it seems ridiculous to me..."
