After the presentation, Lane leans back in his chair, his eyes narrowing as he considers the proposal. He exchanges a look with Vincenzo before turning his attention back to Maya. "You've put together a solid plan, Maya. I can see the thought and effort that went into this. However, we have some concerns."

Maya, Carina, and Jack exchange glances, bracing themselves for the counteroffer.

"We understand your desire to take on more responsibilities, and we agree that Sarah's presence has been problematic. So, we'll release her immediately," Lane begins, his tone measured. "But as for us stepping back entirely right now, that's something we're not ready to do."

Vincenzo nods in agreement, his voice firm but not unkind. "We've spent decades building these businesses. We can't just hand over the reins overnight. Our proposal is to transition slowly—over the next five years, we'll gradually step back, giving you more control and responsibility each year."

Maya feels a mix of emotions—relief that Sarah will be out of the picture, but also frustration at the extended timeline. "Five years is a long time," she replies, trying to keep her tone neutral.

Lane nods, understanding her reaction. "It is, but it's also a reasonable amount of time for a smooth transition. You'll still have significant control, but we'll be there to provide guidance and ensure that the businesses continue to thrive."

Carina speaks up, her voice steady. "And what about our roles during this transition? How will that work?"

Vincenzo leans forward slightly. "Carina, you'll take on the role of COO as proposed, and Maya will begin stepping into the CEO role, with Jack as CFO. We'll work closely with all of you, but ultimately, you'll be the ones running the day-to-day operations. As we step back more each year, you'll gradually assume full control."

Maya glances at Carina, who gives her a subtle nod, signaling her support. Jack, too, looks thoughtful, weighing the pros and cons.

Maya takes a deep breath before responding. "We appreciate your willingness to release Sarah immediately and to work with us on this transition. However, we need to ensure that this isn't just a stalling tactic. We want clear milestones and benchmarks to measure this transition over the next five years."

Lane nods, his expression softening slightly. "Fair enough. We can work out the details together and ensure that everyone is on the same page."

Vincenzo adds, "We want this to work, Maya. We believe in your abilities, and we're committed to making this transition as smooth as possible."

Maya clears her throat, "Let us discuss this and we will get back to you both with our final answer"

After a few more minutes of discussion, they agree to meet again to iron out the specifics of the five-year plan. The meeting ends on a cautiously optimistic note, with Maya, Carina, and Jack leaving the room feeling a mix of determination and resolve.

As they step out into the hallway, Maya turns to Carina and Jack. "It's not exactly what we wanted, but it's a start. We'll make sure they stick to the plan."

Carina squeezes Maya's hand reassuringly. "We'll get there, Maya. Together."

Jack nods, his expression confident. "We've got this. We just need to stay focused and keep pushing forward."

After the intense meeting with Lane and Vincenzo, Maya and Jack reconvene in Maya's office to rework the deal. They sit at the conference table, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the room as they spread out their notes and documents. The atmosphere is serious but focused, both of them determined to craft a deal that secures their future leadership while respecting the terms set by Lane and Vincenzo.
