"What?" he asked
"You put papers in my bag and locker. You threatened me," Chuu said, her voice shaking as she held out the notes.
Hyunjin glared at Suga. "Who's Jiwoo?"
"Me?" Chuu looked confused.
"Why are you acting like you didn't do it?" Heejin pressed.
"Because I didn't." he says
His dad jumped in, "Yeah, that was me."
Chuu's pov
"Oh," I said, feeling the ground shift beneath me.
"But...how?" Heejin asked, bewildered.
"I work at the school, remember?"
"Fuck, I forgot," Heejin hissed.
"I put one in her locker—it was a bit hard, but I managed before classes ended. The one in her backpack was easy. She was here."
"So that's why you said Jiwoo instead of Chuu." I realized
"Yes. Your name in school records is Kim Jiwoo."
"Makes sense," Heejin said through gritted teeth.
"Wait, so if his plan was to kill her..." I began, trying to piece together the horror of it all, "Why didn't he?"
"My dad is not a monster, Chuu," Suga said, his voice strained.
"What the fuck do you mean he's not a monster?!" Heejin hissed. "He kept her here for how many...6 years! That's monster behavior!"
"He did, but we treated her well."
"He hit her. Multiple times. Cut her wrists. Didn't care about her health and hygiene. You treated her well, Suga, but he didn't."
"Well, what was I supposed to do?! Buy her a luxury apartment? Think about it! I did it for love!" Suga's dad yelled, desperation seeping into his voice.
For love? For fucking love? He has to be joking.
"Yeah, for love, surely! You fucking asshole—" I hissed
"I'm so gonna call the police on you. You deserve to rot in jail forever!" Heejin declared, pulling out her phone and starting to dial.
I stopped her. "No, not yet. Yves said no police until I see her."
"You guys talked?! How have I never noticed?!" Suga's dad said, his voice laced with shock.
"Because you're fucking dumb," Heejin snapped.
"I want to see her now." I said
"And you're gonna call the police on me, right? What will I do then? I have two kids and no wife! Where will they go?!" Suga's dad pleaded, his voice cracking.
"They won't go anywhere. You'll just rot in prison forever, I hope," Heejin said with conviction.
"I think we can make something up so my dad doesn't go to jail—"
"No! Not a chance! Everybody needs to know the truth! Who knows what else you guys are hiding! This is why I hate men!"
Heejin's anger was palpable. She was right. They say it's not all men who are bad, but it feels like it always comes back to men.
"I agree with Heejin. No more fighting. I want to see Yves. Right now. We have weapons and we know how to use them. Show me my best friend now."
"Dad, please, give them the key. I can't imagine how bad Chuu feels for Yves. Please, Dad. This is the right decision. Me and my sister will be fine."
Suga's dad hesitated but finally reached into his pocket, pulling out a key. He handed it to me, his face a mask of resignation. "I hope you have a good lawyer for me. The basement is that way," he pointed toward the door behind him.
This was it. I grabbed the key and rushed toward the door he pointed at, Heejin right behind me. My hands were trembling as I struggled to unlock it. Finally, the lock clicked, and I looked at Heejin.
She nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "You did it. I'm proud of you." Tears glistened in her eyes, and I felt mine welling up too.
I took a deep breath and opened the door. The basement was shrouded in darkness, but I could see a faint light ahead. I descended the stairs slowly, each step echoing the heavy weight of the moment.
There she was.
Sitting on the dirty, cold floor.
Reading some newspapers.
I didn't say anything. I just stared at her, tears streaming down my face. I let out a loud sniffle, and that's when she looked up.
Her eyes widened in shock and then filled with tears. She stood up, her face a mixture of relief and sorrow.
Without a word, she ran to me and wrapped her arms around me.
I hugged her back tightly, feeling the warmth of her embrace against the cold, harsh reality of everything that had happened.
"It's over, Yves," I whispered through my tears, holding her close.
