Maya locked herself in the bathroom soon after, and it felt like forever. The minutes dragged on, each one heavier than the last. I could hear her muffled sobs through the door, and my heart ached for her, but also for myself. The betrayal, the shock-it was too much to handle alone.

"Maya," I called softly, pressing my hand against the door. "Please... just talk to me."

There was no answer, just the sound of her crying. I bit my lip, struggling to find the right words, but nothing seemed adequate. What do you say when your best friend's heart is breaking and yours feels like it's shattering alongside hers?

"I'm here for you, okay?" I said, my voice wavering. "I know it hurts, but... we'll get through this together."

But even as I said it, I wasn't sure I believed it myself. I felt so lost, so utterly confused by everything that had happened. My phone felt like a lead weight in my pocket, the unanswered messages to Lucas still burning in my mind.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I heard the lock click. The door opened slowly, and Maya stepped out. Her face was a mess, her eyes red and swollen, tears staining her cheeks, but there was something different in her expression. The vulnerable girl who had locked herself away was gone, replaced by someone determined, resolute.

"Are you okay?" I asked, my voice trembling with concern.

"I'm fine," she replied, her tone steady, almost cold. "I just needed to get it out."

Her words sounded strong, but there was a sadness in her eyes that broke my heart. I nodded, not sure what to say, the weight of the situation pressing down on both of us.

"What now?" I asked, my voice small, filled with the same sadness I saw in her.

"Now," Maya said, her voice firm as she walked towards the mirror, "we take a long, hard look in the mirror."

I followed her, watching as she stood in front of her reflection, her gaze hardening. She wasn't going to let this break her, not anymore.

"I'm done crying," she declared, her voice stronger now.

She glanced at me, and for a moment, the toughness in her gaze softened as she saw the tear rolling down my cheek

She glanced at me, and for a moment, the toughness in her gaze softened as she saw the tear rolling down my cheek. Reaching out, she gently wiped it away. "They're not worth it."

I tried to smile through my own tears, but it was hard. Everything hurt. Everything felt wrong.

"You are a bad bitch," Maya said, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Don't let them make you forget that."

"Fuck Lucas," Maya whispered, her voice confident, sure.

"Fuck Lucas," I echoed, the words feeling strange but cathartic on my tongue.

"And fuck you, Tyler," she added, her eyes narrowing as they landed on the photo of the two of them pinned to the mirror. Without hesitation, she reached up, tore it down, and ripped it in half. The sound of the paper tearing seemed to echo in the silence of the room, and I couldn't help but laugh, the sound mixed with a sob as more tears escaped my eyes.

"Well, I guess you were right," I said, my voice shaky. "It wasn't me, it was him."

Maya's face fell slightly, a few more tears slipping down her cheeks as she looked at me. "And he's gonna regret it."

Her words were filled with a fierce determination, and something in her tone made me believe her. I nodded, wiping away my tears as I tried to hold onto that same strength she was showing.

"They're both gonna regret it," I agreed, my voice gaining a little more confidence as I met her gaze.

For a moment, we just stood there, looking at each other, the weight of our shared pain settling between us. But then, a mischievous glimmer sparked in Maya's eyes, and before I knew it, she was pulling me into a hug.

We held onto each other tightly, as if our embrace could somehow make all the hurt go away. It didn't, not completely, but it was a start. We were both broken, but maybe, just maybe, we could put each other back together again.

And as we stood there, hugging in the middle of her room, I realized that no matter what happened next, we would face it together.
