I walked out of the interrogation room, my steps slow and heavy as I entered the precinct's main area. The cold, sterile lighting made everything feel distant, almost unreal, like I was floating through a nightmare I couldn't wake up from. I sighed deeply, the weight of the last few hours pressing down on my chest, and reached into my pocket to pull out my phone.
With shaky fingers, I dialed my mom's number. The ringing in my ear was the only sound in the world that felt real, something tangible I could hold onto.
"Mom?" I said when she picked up. My voice was soft, almost a whisper. "Can you pick me up? I'm at the station."
There was a moment of silence on the other end, and I could hear the worry in her voice even before she spoke. "Maya, what happened? Are you okay?"
"Yeah, don't worry about it," I lied, trying to keep my voice steady. "I'm fine. Just... just come get me, please."
"Okay, honey. I'm on my way. I'll be there soon."
"Thanks, Mom." I hung up the phone and looked around the room, my eyes scanning the sterile surroundings until they landed on a worn-out couch in the corner. I dragged myself over to it and collapsed into the cushions, my body slumping back as the exhaustion washed over me.
For a moment, I just sat there, staring blankly at the walls, trying to make sense of everything that had happened. But my mind started to drift, slipping away from the present, pulling me back to that night-the night everything changed.

I was back in my bathroom, sitting on the cold, tiled floor, my back turned to the door. The tears were falling fast, soaking my cheeks as I hugged my knees to my chest. It felt like I was dying, like my heart had shattered into a billion tiny pieces that could never be put back together. Every sob that wracked my body felt like it was tearing me apart from the inside, leaving nothing but emptiness behind.
I could hear Casey on the other side of the door, her voice muffled and desperate as she tried to offer comfort. But the words were drowned out by the sound of my own crying, by the overwhelming pain that consumed me. It was as if the world had collapsed around me, and all I could do was sit there, broken and alone, drowning in my sorrow.
The minutes dragged on, stretching into an eternity as I sat there, sobbing into the silence. Every breath was a struggle, every tear felt like it was carving new wounds into my already broken heart. It hurt so much, more than anything I'd ever felt before, like a piece of my soul had been ripped away and all that was left was the pain.
It felt like dying. Like a part of me had been ripped away and buried beneath the weight of everything that had happened. I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't feel anything but the unbearable, suffocating pain. And all I could do was cry, my body trembling with the force of my grief, the sound of my sobs filling the small, empty room.
