A 10-year old Delainey Shaw was playing with her good friend Cora, in the girls house, neither of them were old enough to have gotten their supernatural abilities yet and so were the last ones in the house that day to notice the fire.

Delainey had left Cora's bedroom momentarily, carrying Cora's favourite stuffed animal, a penguin, that the other girl had let her borrow. She greeted Amara in the hallway happily as she continued looking for her mother, she had reached the stairs and that's when she saw the flames, she didn't know what to do and immediately began to panic.

She was now coughing after inhaling some of the smoke, the small girl slowly walked away from the flames that seemed to be chasing after her, she tried her hardest but she couldn't move any faster as she felt her lungs burn.

She soon ran into a large body that scooped her up and carried her to the other stairway of the large house.

Peter Hale. He carried Delainey in one arm and his niece, Amara in the other. When flames seemed to burst out of nowhere Peter used his own body to shield the two girls from the heat, this resulted in him getting severe burns on the right side of his body.

Amara had passed out by now but Delainey was still awake so when they reached the safety of the area surrounding the house, away from the blazing heat. Peter asked Delainey if she knew where Cora was, the man clearly planned to go back into the house to save Cora too.

"S-she was in...h-her r-rooom", Delainey told him between coughs. The Hale man, despite being in excruciating pain ran back towards the house and frantically searched for Cora.

Clearly someone had called the fire department as the sirens were heard and they immediately began to try and extinguish the flames. Amara had awoken by now and she and Del held each other's hands tightly as they each wished they wouldn't be the only ones to make it out.

Delainey's older brother Joseph, who was the same age as Derek, soon appeared followed by Laura and Derek. Luckily Thomas had gone to play at his friend's house that day and so was nowhere near the fire.

Joseph held his little sister closely as the girl cried, he was so relieved she was safe, "Mom was inside", Delainey cried hysterically still gripping onto the stuffed penguin in her hand. Derek and Laura were right next to them trying to comfort Amara. "I know, it'll all be okay though, you're safe now", Joseph told Delainey.

Eventually, Peter was pulled from the building, he was alive but barely, his burns having been even worse than when Delainey had last saw them. He had clearly fought as hard as he could trying to get to Cora, but he didn't make it in time.

She was brought to Beacon Hills Hospital where a kind nurse had looked after her. Melissa McCall would always remember the day where the burnt bodies on an entire family were brought to the morgue and she had to look after a little girl who's life would never be the same after such an event. Neither of them ever forgot that day and Delainey never forget the kind nurse who had held her hand when the doctors were checking her over and brought her the good jello from the cafeteria to try to cheer her up.

Peter, Amara and Delainey were the only people who made it out of the fire that day and the two little girls wouldn't have made it out at all if it wasn't for Peter.

He was a hero. And that's what Delainey would always remember him as. She still visited the man, who had been in a coma for past six years, as often as she could. She wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for him and so she did what she deemed as the bare minimum, making him feel a little less alone by just talking to him in the hopes that he might be able to hear her.
