It was the third day since I had been transferred to Wammy's House. The memories of my previous life were gone, and the unfamiliar surroundings felt overwhelming. While the other kids played soccer on the vibrant green field, their laughter echoing through the air, Near and I sat quietly in the shade under a large oak tree, our heads buried in books. The contrast between the lively scene on the field and the serene atmosphere beneath the tree was stark, but it was comforting—at least for me.

Out of nowhere, a soccer ball flew against the tree, the impact startling me, and landed with a soft thud between Near and me. I flinched, my heart skipping a beat as I looked up in surprise.

"Oh, sorry, Near!" A blonde boy with very pale skin, wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and black pants, suddenly appeared in front of us. His appearance was striking, with light blue eyes that seemed to pierce through you, a delicate nose, and large lips that curved into a mischievous grin.

"Why are you sitting in the shade again? Why don't you come play? Then no one will treat you like an outsider," continued the blonde boy, his tone playful but laced with genuine concern. His presence was overwhelming, and I found myself shrinking back, trying to make myself as small as possible.

"I don't like the sun. You know that, Mello," Near replied quietly, his voice steady but detached as he kept his gaze fixed on his book.

"Come on, play with us! Aren't you bored just sitting in the shade all the time and reading books..." Mello's voice trailed off as his eyes landed on me for the first time. "So you're the new girl who's always with Near. What's your name?"

I froze, my heart pounding in my chest. The only sound I could hear was the rustling of the leaves above us, a soothing backdrop to my inner turmoil. My throat felt tight, and I couldn't bring myself to speak, no matter how much I wanted to.

Near, sensing my discomfort, spoke up for me. "This is Mary. She hasn't said a single word since she arrived here."

"She hasn't said a word? Why?" Mello crouched down in front of me, his face inches from mine. "Hey, Mary. Why? What's wrong with you?" His eyes were searching, almost pleading, as if he genuinely wanted to understand what was going on inside my head. His closeness made my heart race, and I felt a wave of panic wash over me.
