❝ WE WERE ALMOST ROADKILL. ❞

AFTER THE TRIO spent the last few minutes of the journey laughing at koosh's failed video he made in his older brother's car, they all quickly got off the bus. eddie was the first to step off the bus, followed by reina, then lastly connor.

however, as soon as reina stood by eddie, a car zoomed past them all at an alarmingly close distance. she stood in shock, feeling connor's hand still on her shoulder from pulling her backwards.

"move, pussies!"

connor walked forward, watching ruby drive away down the road. "what the fuck, man?!"

"you okay?" eddie asked, waving a hand in front of reina's face.

she snapped out of it, giving him a small reassuring smile. "yeah, i almost died. what a warm welcome to high school," she joked.

the two joined connor as they continued to look where ruby drove off to. "i have a bad feeling about this," eddie shook his head.

"lady and gentlemen!"

the three turned their heads towards their other friend, benj, who approached them. he wrapped his arms around connor and eddie's shoulders, looking between all three of them. "ready for the best year of our lives?"

benj put his hand up, and reina instantly knew what he was going to do. she ducked and took a step back, pointing at him with a glare. "not today, neilson, it's the first day."

benj always ruffled her hair - in an endearing way of course. not only was she like a sister to him and he liked to do it to piss her off sometimes, but he also knew of her hair insecurities. it was a silent way of saying: 'hey, your curly hair is perfect the way it is, messy or not.'

"it was almost the last year of our lives! you fuckin' see that shit?" connor gestured towards where they last stood as the four made their way onto the sidewalk.

reina nodded. "we were almost roadkill!"

benj waved them off. "ancient history."

"you'll be ancient history in a minute," reina threatened, immediately being held back by connor putting an arm over her shoulder.

benj cleared his throat, pretending like he wasn't mildly intimidated by the curly head in front of him. "once that bell rings, we're in high school. know what that means?"

"new teachers? more pressure from our parents to succeed?" eddie spoke.

"more hormonal freaks?" reina shrugged.

"pubes?" connor guessed, earning a nod in agreement from eddie. reina sent him an odd look.

"no, it means we have a fresh start. anything is possible," benj cleared up, turning to his right. "here comes koosh."

the four looked to see koosh and his older brother, kayvon, step out of his car. reina stifled a laugh when she saw koosh throw his empty chip packet on the ground, trying to copy his brother throwing away his cigarette.
