Later that night, Kath and Lin entered Lin’s apartment hand-in-hand. Lin turned to shut the door as Kath removed her coat and turned back toward the taller brunette. Lin could tell she had something on her mind, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was.
“Is everything okay?” Lin asked, taking the brunette’s coat from her hands to hang it on the hook.
“Was that Jane on the phone that night?” Kath finally asked.
“What night?” Lin asked. She stopped in her tracks when she realized that the question was dumb, she knew which night. Lin slowly turned around, afraid to make eye contact with the other woman in fear that she would be upset.
“After we broke up.” Kath’s words pierced through Lin’s ears.
December 2018
It had been 2 days since Kath broke up with Lin and the taller brunette was still all she could think about.
“Maybe I’ll call her and we can talk about it again,” Kath said to herself.
She took a deep breath and pressed ‘call’ under Lin’s phone number. She placed the phone up to her ear and waited.
“Hello?” An unrecognizable, female voice answered.
“Um, I’m looking for Lin,” Kath said, confused.
“Oh shit, I must have answered her phone thinking it was mine!” the woman laughed.
“Well, can you give her the phone?” Kath asked, annoyed.
“She’s in the bathroom, let me go get her,” she informed her. “Hey, I accidentally answered your phone,” the woman said to Lin, her voice was further away from the phone and a little muffled.
Kath could hear Lin laugh. “Hello?” Lin’s voice came through the phone.
“Really cute, Lin,” Kath spat.
“What? Kath?”.
“We broke up two days ago.”
“Okay?” Lin asked. “Are you calling to remind me of that?”
“Who’s answering your phone?” Kath asked.
“Sorry, she didn’t realize it was mine. Honest mistake,” Lin told her.
“Yeah, I guess that happens when you’re busy banging her right?” Kath asked, growing more annoyed.
“Way to make assumptions,” Lin tried to defend herself.
“Tell me that’s not what it is then,” Kath said.
“Kath, can we not do this?” Lin asked.
“Tell me it’s not true.”
“You know the answer to that already,” Lin sighed.
“I see how much I meant to you!”
“What? No! You don’t get to do that! You broke up with me! You don’t get a say anymore!” Lin yelled.
“But I respect you more than getting under someone the day after we broke up!”
“It’s been 2 days.”
“Not the point.”
“Listen, Kath, you can be mad, but just remember, this was your decision,” Lin told her.
“Fuck you, Lin! Enjoy your random hookup!”
Kath hung up the phone and dropped to the floor. Her phone fell from her hand and landed on the floor with a bang. Kath pulled her knees tight to her chest and dropped her head down into her hands, beginning to sob.
