After that kiss—our first, and certainly not meaningless—everything felt different. The tension that had gripped me for so long, the fear of losing control, all of it seemed to fade into the background. What mattered now was the way Star was looking at me, a soft smile playing on her lips, her eyes bright with something that made my heart race in a way that had nothing to do with nerves.
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Stay here? What did you have in mind?"
She shrugged, a mischievous smile tugging at her lips. "I don't know... Maybe we could hang out, talk, have some fun. We've been so caught up in everything else, we haven't really had a chance to just... be together."
The idea was more appealing than I expected. The thought of spending time with Star, away from the noise and excitement of the ball, just the two of us, was exactly what I needed. No pressure, no expectations—just us, enjoying each other's company.
"Alright," I said, my own smile matching hers. "Let's stay. I think we deserve a break from all the chaos."
Star's smile widened, and she took my hand, leading me to the center of her room. The space was cozy, the bed neatly made, the soft light of the setting sun filtering through the curtains. It was the kind of place that felt safe, warm, like a sanctuary away from everything else.
"Do you like to dance?" she asked, her voice teasing as she glanced at the small music player on her dresser.
I chuckled, shaking my head. "I'm not much of a dancer, to be honest. But for you, I'll give it a shot."
She laughed softly, the sound like music to my ears. "No pressure," she said, squeezing my hand. "It's just us, remember?"
She walked over to the music player and turned it on, selecting a slow, gentle song that filled the room with soft melodies. The music was soothing, the kind that made you want to close your eyes and just sway to the rhythm. Star turned back to me, holding out her hand with that same mischievous smile.
"May I have this dance?" she asked, her tone mock-serious.
I grinned, taking her hand and pulling her close. "You may."
We started to dance, slowly at first, just swaying to the music, our bodies moving in sync. I could feel the warmth of her skin through her dress, the steady beat of her heart against my chest. There was something easy about it, something natural, like we'd done this a hundred times before. It didn't matter that we were in her room, that the world outside was waiting. All that mattered was this moment, and how perfect it felt.
Star rested her head against my shoulder, her breath warm against my neck. I held her close, letting the music guide our movements, feeling the way her body fit against mine like a missing piece. It was comfortable, familiar, and yet there was an underlying thrill to it, a sense of discovery.
We danced like that for a while, lost in the music, lost in each other. We didn't need to talk. The silence between us was comfortable, filled with the unspoken understanding that we didn't need anything else. For the first time, I didn't feel the need to push, to challenge, to win. Being with Star was enough.
Eventually, the song ended, and we slowed to a stop, still holding each other. Star looked up at me, her eyes bright with a happiness that made my chest ache in the best possible way.
"That was nice," she said softly, her voice full of contentment.
"Yeah," I agreed, my voice just as soft. "It was."
We spent the next hour just hanging out, talking about everything and nothing. We laughed, shared stories, and for a little while, it felt like the world outside didn't exist. It was just us, two people who had finally let their walls down, who had finally admitted that there was something real between them.
