She looks at me, unsure of how I feel.
"Are you okay, honey? I know this is really shocking and a lot to take in. But I was able to find a lovely family for you to be a part of. The Fayaer's. And they can't wait to meet you." Alyssa says.
I stay silent, spacing out, staring at the now-empty driveway of my old home. The one where my parents used to fight 24-7. But they'd never fight in front of me. They'd make sure that I was in my room, "asleep", but I never was truly asleep. I was awake, listening to it all, every fucking night. Until one day, it stopped.
I stay quiet, not sure of what to say. I don't want to regret whatever words might come out of my mouth. And I don't want to risk that because she really is such a nice lady. She's from the child services agency. She was sent to help me find a family.
"We'll have the movers pack up the rest of your stuff. That's your bag with all of the essentials that you might need within the first week, right?" She asks me, while pointing to the backpack that's cradled in my arms.
She puts a hand on my shoulder, and I flinch. She takes notice of this and gives my shoulder a quick, reassuring rub and then removes her hand. I nod my head at her question and she gives me a slight smile.
"Okay. Are you ready to meet your new family?" She asks, and I hug my backpack to my chest, tightly. I nod, again.
She opens the passenger side door of the car, and I climb in. She reaches for the seat belt and hands it to me. I give her a slight smile as I take it from her and then buckle myself in. She closes the door, walks around the car and gets in the driver's side, herself. She buckles herself in, turns the car on, puts it in drive, and we drive off.
The drive was long. About an hour and a half. I basically just stared out the window the whole time. Alyssa turned on the radio a few times, playing some upbeat pop music. I didn't mind, though. I just sat there, thinking.
What's my new family going to be like?
"We're here." Alyssa says, as we pull into a long driveway. A house comes into view. Wait, no–I don't think you can even call that a house. It was huge, whatever it was. It was like it was a goddamn mansion, for Christ's sake.
Woah.
Alyssa parks the car in the driveway. She unbuckles her seat belt and then opens her door, I do the same. I grip my backpack in my hand. It was sitting on my lap, glued to my chest, the whole ride here. Alyssa and I walk up to the front door. It was massive. (Add more details here.)
She knocks on the door. A few seconds later, the door opens. A woman and a man stand there. The woman's arm is wrapped around the man's waist, and they're staring at me, like they know exactly who I am. But they don't. I'm not their kid. And I never will be.
They look as happy as can be.
"Hi, Alyssa. It's so nice to meet you. Is this her?" The woman asks Alyssa, smiling nonstop.
"Yes, this is Blakely." Alyssa says.
"Hi, Blakely. I'm Kate and this is Chris. Welcome to your new home." The woman says.
I give them a slight smile and continue to grip my bag.
"Well," Alyssa begins, as she looks at the dainty gold-brimmed watch on her wrist.
"I better get going. I have another appointment not far from here in a half hour."She turns and looks at me. "Blakely," she pauses. "You have my number. Text me if you need anything. Okay?"
I nod at her. "Thank you." I say, in barely a whisper.
