I noticed Dex giving some of his lunch to Marella, both exchanging school food horror stories amongst laughter. Jensi was rambling to me about something, short phrases about some science fiction show is all I could catch from the fast-paced words. I was listening as closely as I possibly could while I ate my food, until I saw a figure coming our way from another table- one in the center of the cafeteria. It was Biana, the girl I had met in P.E..
Everyone else seemed to notice, too, because the other three's talking all halted to a stop. Dex finally broke it- Biana almost to our table -by whispering, "Why is Biana Vacker coming over here? Did anybody do something to get on her nerves? Bump into her and rumple her pristine designer clothes or accidentally knock one of her books to the dirty ground?"
"What?" I asked, before Biana stopped at the table and smiled in my direction.
"Hi, Sophie! Oh, hello to you guys, too. Dex, Marella, and Jensi, right?" she pointed to the three of them while saying their respective names.
"She knows our names?" Dex leaned over to Marella and whispered. I don't think he realized how truely loud he said it, because it was loud enough for everyone at the table, and Biana, to hear. I cringed, and wished desperately that my cousin hadn't said that.
"Why wouldn't I know your names? I have two classes with Marella, one with Jensi, and three with you." Biana seemed genuinely confused by their disbelief at her knowledge of their names, as was I. Seriously, what am I missing?
Earning a sharp shove to the shoulder from Dex, Marella bluntly said, "I don't know, maybe because you only pay attention to other rich, prissy people like yourself."
"I don't really like the kids I usually hang out with. My parents want me to be friends with them for the sake of their work," Biana timidly admitted, her eyes staring at her feet on the ground. I'd just barely met her, yet I somehow knew that this meekness was out of character. "I was actually coming over here to ask if I could sit with you, to get away from the ongoing conversation about how hot my stupid brother and his best friend are. But I'll just go sit through it like usual- if you guys don't want me here." At the conclusion of her little speech, she started to retreat to the direction in which she came from. Marella and Dex sat gaping at each other in mutual shock, Jensi just continued eating his sugar-filled packed lunch, and I stared at the back of my new (maybe?) friend reluctantly walking away from me.
"No, wait! Biana, you can sit here. You're my friend after all, right?" I asked, as she stopped and turned on her heel to face me. A flicker of hope exploded in her aquamarine eyes, instantly noticeably brightening them. Even if they wanted to, Marella and Dex didn't say a word about me allowing her to sit here, still too shell-shocked to form a coherent sentence.
"Really? Thanks! And of course we're friends!" She sat next to me, pulling a pale purple lunchbox out of her backpack.
Jensi, being as hyper as ever- and oddly generous, despite his demeanor -offered, "Hey, Biana, do you want some of my sour punch straws? I brought a bunch." He stuck his hand out to her, three pieces of the candy held in his hand.
Biana eagerly smiled an open-toothed grin, and grabbed the sweets out of the boy's hand. "Thanks! My parents never allow any candy, or any junk food really. I usually have to sneak somewhere I know they'll never know I went, buy some from my own allowance, and then hide it in my room."
Taking an awkward bow, while still sitting down, Jensi responded, saying, "I will gladly be your junk food dealer. Sugar and carbs galore." This statement earned a giggle from Biana and I, the other two still frozen in their seats. What the heck was up with them?
Marella seemed to be the first to break out of the trance, and got straight to the point, clearly not being the type to beat around the bush. "Are you pranking us? Hang out with the losers and publicly humiliate them after gaining their trust? You can't be this nice, you're a Vacker, all of them are snooty, rude, and self-centered."
"I'm not pranking you guys, I finally decided that I want to have real friends- other than my brother's best friend -for the first time in my life. All the other people I spend time with care too much about stupid things and talk about people behind their backs. And you're not wrong about the Vacker thing, really. I wish I was born into literally any other family. I understand if you don't want to be my friend, or even trust me, but I'm not tricking you. You guys just seem like actually good people."
Still in apparent disbelief, Marella and Dex shared a long look between themselves. Then, as if in an agreement, Dex spoke for the both of them (while Marella just looked at Biana with squinted eyes). "Okay, but you're on probation. One mess up and you don't ever get to sit with us again."
"I accept those terms. Thank you guys so much for trusting me at least a little bit. I don't want to follow my parents' stupid rules anymore. I don't know why did for so long, they only care about Alvar and Fitz."
Her lips upturned slightly, Marella revealed, "I always thought Fitz was way worse than you- even if I hated you both a bunch -anyway."
"If that was a compliment, thank you?" Biana gave a hesitant smile to the blue eyed girl, before starting to eat like the rest of us already were.
