Lucas's POV:
It had been a week since Sasha had been discharged from the hospital, and though she still looked fragile, there was a hint of resilience in her eyes. Today marked her first real day back home, and I was determined to make it as comfortable and peaceful as possible. I watched as Sasha stood by the bed, changing into a simple black long-sleeve shirt and sweatpants. The sight of her in comfortable clothes, finally free from the hospital gown, felt like a small victory.
I was dressed in grey sweatpants and a white t-shirt, my usual casual attire for a day spent at home. My role was to ensure Sasha's transition back to normal life was smooth, which included taking care of her needs, making sure she ate well, and helping her rest. She was on medical leave for a month, which gave her some time to recuperate without the pressure of work.
As we approached the penthouse, I could feel a mix of anticipation and nervousness. I had to make sure everything was perfect for her return. I unlocked the door and let Sasha step inside first. Her eyes scanned the familiar surroundings, taking in the cozy decor and the sense of normalcy that had been missing for so long. The dogs, Scooby and Daisy, were already at the door, their excitement palpable as they sensed Sasha's presence.
I gently held them back as we entered, trying to manage their enthusiasm. Scooby and Daisy were eager to reunite with Sasha, their tails wagging furiously. "Easy, guys," I murmured, holding them just far enough away to give Sasha some space to settle in. Once inside, I let the dogs approach her, allowing them to gently come up to her as she sat on the couch.
The moment Sasha saw Scooby and Daisy, her eyes filled with tears of joy. She reached out for Scooby first, her hands trembling as she petted him. I could see the love and relief in her expression as she hugged her beloved dog. Daisy followed, nuzzling against her with equal affection. The sight of them together, the reunion of Sasha with her loyal companions, was heartwarming.
Sasha's tears were a mixture of happiness and lingering sadness, but her smile was genuine. "I missed you guys so much," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. I watched as she lovingly petted both dogs, her fingers running through their fur as they snuggled up to her.
With the dogs settled beside her, I retreated to the kitchen to prepare her requested meal: mac and cheese. I chuckled to myself when Sasha asked for extra for the puppies. It was just like her to think of them even when she had been through so much. I set to work, making sure the mac and cheese was as comforting as possible. The smell of melted cheese and pasta filled the kitchen, and I couldn't help but smile at the thought of Sasha's happiness when she tasted it.
Once the mac and cheese was ready, I filled the dogs' bowls with their share of the cheesy goodness and carried them out to the living room. Sasha watched with a grateful smile as I brought her a bowl and settled onto the couch next to her. The dogs eagerly devoured their portion, their tails wagging in delight.
I sat down beside Sasha and handed her a bowl. She curled up next to me, her body seeking warmth and comfort. As we ate, I occasionally fed her bites of mac and cheese when she seemed too distracted or tired to eat on her own. Each bite I offered was accompanied by gentle encouragement, and I could see the gradual improvement in her appetite as she enjoyed the meal.
The mac and cheese was soon gone, and I took the empty bowls to the sink. I could hear the soft murmur of the TV in the background as I returned to the living room. Sasha had already settled on the couch, her body relaxed and her head resting on the cushions. I lay down beside her, allowing her to climb into my arms. She seemed to find solace in the closeness, and I was more than willing to provide it.
I wrapped a blanket around us, making sure Sasha was warm and comfortable. The dogs had settled at the end of the couch, their bodies pressed close together, their soft breathing a comforting rhythm against the quiet room. The TV played softly, but my attention was solely on Sasha.
As we lay there, the exhaustion of the past week seemed to melt away. Sasha's breathing evened out, and I could tell she was starting to drift off to sleep. Her presence in my arms was a soothing comfort, and I held her close, mindful of her fragile state. The blanket was tucked snugly around us, and I adjusted it to make sure she stayed warm.
The room was filled with a sense of peace that had been absent for so long. The ordeal was not over, but for now, we were together, and that was enough. With the dogs content and Sasha nestled against me, I felt a sense of tranquility. We all drifted off to sleep, wrapped in the warmth of the blanket and the comfort of each other's presence. The world outside could wait; for now, we were home, and that was all that mattered.
One month later...
Sasha's POV:
I take a deep breath as I look around the living room, feeling a sense of accomplishment as I finish fluffing the last pillow on the couch. The penthouse feels like home now, more than I ever thought it would. It's hard to believe how much has changed in just a month. I've been seeing Dr. Marks every other day, and I have to admit, it's helping. The nightmares and flashbacks still come, but they don't control me anymore. I'm stronger now, or at least I'm getting there.
The thought of moving in here permanently crosses my mind again as I straighten up a few magazines on the coffee table. I've been mulling it over for a while now, and the more I think about it, the more it feels like the right thing to do. My apartment is still just sitting there, but I don't feel the same attachment to it. This place—Lucas's place—feels like where I'm supposed to be.
I move to the kitchen, wiping down the counters and making sure everything is in its place. Lucas will be home soon, and I want everything to be perfect. I've been doing this more and more lately, wanting to make sure he knows how much I appreciate him. He's been my rock through all of this, and the least I can do is keep things nice for him.
Scooby and Daisy are curled up together on the rug, watching me as I move around. I smile at them, my heart warming at the sight. They've been such a comfort to me, especially on the nights when the memories become too much. I crouch down and give them both a scratch behind the ears. "You two have been so good," I murmur, feeling their soft fur under my fingers.
Standing up, I glance at the clock. Lucas should be home any minute now. I feel a flutter of anticipation in my chest, the kind that still surprises me sometimes. We've gotten so much closer over the past few weeks, and I can't deny the way my feelings for him have deepened. He's been so patient, and so understanding, and I can't imagine my life without him in it.
My mind drifts to tomorrow—my first day back at work. I'm nervous, but I also feel ready. It's time to get back to normal, or at least as close to normal as I can. I know Lucas is worried, but I need to do this. I need to prove to myself that I can move forward.
I finish tidying up and take a step back to admire the clean, organized space. The penthouse is spotless, and I feel a sense of calm wash over me. Everything is in its place, just like it should be. I take another deep breath and walk over to the window, looking out at the city below. The sun is just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over everything.
As I stand there, I hear the sound of the front door opening. My heart skips a beat, and I turn around to see Lucas walking in. His eyes meet mine, and he smiles that smile that always makes my heart flutter.
"Hey," he says, his voice warm and soothing.
"Hey," I reply, feeling a rush of warmth spread through me.
He walks over and pulls me into his arms, and for a moment, everything feels right in the world. This is where I belong. This is home. Maybe not permanently yet, but one day. One day it will be.
