With the outfit and jewellery ready, Malini convinces Imlie to completely get her ready.
"But I don't know to use these city make up products Malini Didi! I only know how it is done in the village"
"Then do the same for me Imlie. It will make everything different and unique" Malini says, her excitement increasing. Unable to refuse after that and not particularly wanting to, Imlie readily agrees.
"Toh abhi aap jaiye. Fresh hoke aaiye. Phir blouse aur peticoat pehen lijiye. Hum make up karde phir aap saree pehen sakte ho"
("Toh now you go, refresh and come. Then you wear your blouse and peticoat. I'll do your makeup and then you can drape the saree")"Yes sure! Thank you so much Imlie" she says and pulls her into a tight hug which Imlie returns.
_She is seated on the stool with her red blouse and green peticoat on, a towel covering her bosom as she puts on some basic foundation mixed with concealer. Once she's done, Imlie takes over. She applies a little powder, uses plain kajal for the eyes after which she uses some betroot powder as a blush. Using her hand, she rubs it in strokes, giving the desired light shade for the blush. She then mixes a little sandalwood powder with the beetroot powder to get a little of the maroon color that she uses as eye shadow. She then takes some shringar liquid bindi and makes an elegant bindi on her forehead.
The Malini she sees in the reflection looks so beautiful that it makes her face glow with happiness. Ever since this wonderful girl has come into her life, even the smallest of her wishes have been coming into fruition and she cannot be more grateful than she is.
"How is it Malini Didi? Do you like it?" Imlie asks a little nervously.
"Like it? Imlie, I love it!!! What did you even use to give such a wonderful color to my cheeks. It all looks so natural and it is also so pleasant against my skin!" Malini exclaims, admiring the eye shadow and the blush.
"Just betroot powder Didi!"
"Betroot powder?! Where did you even get it from?"
"I had a little with me Didi. We use multani mitti back in Pagdandiya for our skin and nothing else. But Halka mausi had found out that this beetroot powder makes the skin better. She began making it for her daughter who was to be married and she gave me some too"
"Oh that's great!"
Imlie smiles and says
"Chalo, let's get your hair done and then you can drape the saree"Malini nods
_The hairstyle Malini goes with is a low chignon. Imlie helps her put on some white gajra after she's done with setting her hair such. It looks beautiful.
Malini then wears the saree even as Imlie keeps the make up items back in place. She then helps with the pleats and Malini is soon draped in the beautiful saree. The last thing left is her jewellery. A simple red necklace and jhumkas that she wears. Then picking up her sindoor casket, she wears a pinch, completing her look.
(Looks something like this, like the closest picture I could get)
"You are looking so beautiful Malini Didi" Imlie says and Malini beams her thanks.
"Yes and it is all because of you my little sister!"
Imlie opens her mouth to say it is not really so only to be interrupted by a knock on the door which is followed by Aparna calling Malini's name. Imlie opens the door to Aparna and Radha standing at the doorstep. One look at Malini and they begin gushing over how beautiful she looks, putting a nazar ka teeka behind her ears. When she credits it all to Imlie, they shift their attention to her, affectionately hugging her and thanking her for making everything better. It is amidst all this that Aditya comes towards the room, intending to change for the ceremony now that Malini is done as evident by the open door. But when he sees Malini, everything in him stills. The only image that comes to his mind is her. Her in her red green saree, a combination he had never seen for a bride. The jhumkas, the jewellery, the bindi, everything on Malini only brings back the image of how Imlie looked as his newly wed bride.
His fists clench, a sinking feeling in his chest. He suddenly finds it difficult to breath, suddenly feels something rising in him. He turns away from the room and walks away before any of them can spot him. He can't do this now! He can't!
_"Arey Aditya" Malini says and moves behind him, having spotted him just as he turned away but doesn't stop at her voice. His eyes are already red and he cannot bear the thought of unleashing himself on her like he knows he would if he were to stop.
Malini stops midway when Aditya does not turn at her calling. Her face that had been glowing a moment back now appears replete with stress and a tinge of hurt. It is enough for Imlie to decide to enter the lion's den, incapable of bearing this stress on her Didi's face having seen the glow of happiness on it just a moment back. She runs in the direction he disappeared off in while Radha and Aparna hold Malini to assure her that it's alright, all the while not understanding why Adi would walk away like that from his newly wedded wife who happens to be looking so resplendent.
_He is on the terrace of the house, sitting on the swing, eyes holding a faraway look, fists still clenched. This is when he hears the familiar tinkle of her bangles. He looks up to find her moving towards him hesitantly despite the determination in her eyes.
Before he can say a word, before he can unleash the barrage of words on her like she knows he would, she speaks
"Before you say anything Babusaheb, this is not the time. The guests have begun coming in and your wi-wife is stressed because of your reaction. She was extremely happy and glowing before you decided to walk away like that. Please come in and get changed. The ceremony will start in ten minutes."
And then she walks away despite the urge that arises within to walk back and wipe away the tears on his face.
