Ethan drove home in silence, the only sound in the car being the soft hum of the engine as it cut through the night. His mind was a tangled web of thoughts, all circling around the same central question: How was he going to break it to Emily that their marriage wasn't working? That he wanted out? He had promised her six months to try and rekindle what they had lost, but with each passing day, the idea of continuing to live this double life weighed more heavily on him.
Emily deserved someone better, someone who could give her the love and attention she needed. But how could he tell her that without breaking her heart? And did he really have to wait six months? Wouldn't it be kinder to end things sooner, before they became even more complicated?
He sighed, his hands tightening around the steering wheel as he turned into their driveway. The house was dark, save for the soft glow of a lamp in the living room window. Emily had left it on for him, as she always did, a small gesture that suddenly felt loaded with meaning.
Ethan killed the engine and sat in the car for a moment, trying to steel himself for what lay ahead. But no matter how much he tried to prepare, the thought of ending things with Emily made his stomach churn. He wasn't sure he could go through with it, not when she was so clearly trying to make things work between them.
Finally, he forced himself to get out of the car and walk to the front door. As he stepped inside, the warm, familiar scent of home washed over him, and for a moment, he allowed himself to relax. But that moment was short-lived.
"Ethan?" Emily's voice called from the kitchen, bright and cheerful. "Is that you?"
"Yeah, it's me," Ethan replied, trying to keep his voice steady as he set his keys on the table by the door. "What are you doing up so late?"
"I wanted to surprise you," Emily said with a smile as she appeared in the doorway, a sparkle in her eyes that Ethan hadn't seen in a long time. "Come on, I've got something special planned."
Ethan followed her into the kitchen, his curiosity piqued despite the heaviness in his chest. When he entered, he saw that Emily had gone all out. The table was set with candles, and a delicious meal was waiting for them, the smell of roasted chicken and herbs filling the air.
"Wow, Emily," Ethan said, genuinely impressed. "This looks amazing."
"I thought we could use a special night," Emily said, her smile soft and inviting. "To remind us of all the good times we've had together."
Ethan's heart twisted in his chest. This was exactly what he had been dreading—Emily making an effort, trying to pull them back together just as he was preparing to pull away. But he couldn't bring himself to ruin the evening, not when she had clearly put so much thought and care into it.
They sat down to dinner, and Emily chatted happily about her day, about work, and about the plans she had for them in the coming weeks. Ethan listened, nodding in all the right places, but his mind kept drifting back to Sophia and the impossible situation he had created for himself.
As they finished dinner, Emily stood up and walked over to Ethan, her smile turning coy. "There's one more surprise," she said, her voice dropping to a sultry whisper. "Come with me."
Ethan followed her down the hall, his heart pounding as they entered the bedroom. Emily turned to him with a playful smile, her hands moving to the ties of her robe. With a slow, deliberate motion, she let it fall to the floor, revealing a new nightgown beneath—a soft, lacy number that hugged her curves in all the right places.
Ethan's breath caught in his throat as he took in the sight of her. For a moment, his thoughts flashed to Sophia, to the passionate nights they had spent together, but Emily quickly pulled him back to the present. She stepped closer, her hand brushing against his chest as she leaned in to kiss him.
"Do you like it?" she whispered, her lips brushing against his ear.
Ethan nodded, his voice thick with emotion. "You look beautiful, Emily."
She smiled at his words, her hands trailing down his chest as she pressed her body against his. "I thought we could spend the rest of the night... reconnecting," she said, her voice laced with anticipation.
Ethan's heart pounded in his chest, torn between his guilt and the undeniable attraction he still felt for his wife. Emily reached up and pulled his head down, capturing his lips in a deep, passionate kiss. As their lips moved together, Ethan felt his resolve beginning to crumble.
Emily's hands moved to the straps of her nightgown, slowly sliding them off her shoulders as she revealed herself to him. She played with one side of her breast, her eyes locked on his as she invited him to suck the other. Ethan's mind was a whirl of conflicting emotions, but in that moment, he couldn't resist her.
He leaned down, his lips finding her breast as he took her invitation. Emily moaned softly, her hands tangling in his hair as she pulled him closer. The sound of her voice, the feel of her skin, was enough to anchor him back to reality, to remind him of the woman he had once loved so deeply.
As they moved to the bed, Emily's hands roamed over Ethan's body, her touch lighting a fire that had been smouldering for years. Ethan responded in kind, his hands exploring her. For this moment, he wanted to be fully present, to give Emily what she deserved.
Their bodies found a familiar rhythm as they made love. Emily whispered his name, her voice filled with longing as she urged him on. Ethan buried his face in her neck, his breath ragged as he tried to focus on the here and now, on the promise he had made to her to try for a child.
As he thrust deeper into her, Emily cried out, her body arching beneath him as she reached her climax. Ethan followed soon after, his mind a jumble of emotions as he released deep within her, fulfilling the promise he had made to give their marriage a real chance.
When it was over, they lay together in the quiet of the room, their bodies still entwined as they caught their breath. Emily rested her head on Ethan's chest, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his skin. "That was... amazing," she murmured, her voice filled with contentment.
Ethan nodded, though his mind was already beginning to drift back to the thoughts that had plagued him earlier. How was he going to tell Emily that their marriage was over when she was trying so hard to save it? The guilt of what he had done, of what he was still doing, weighed heavily on him.
As Emily drifted off to sleep, Ethan lay awake, staring at the ceiling as his thoughts churned. He knew he couldn't keep this up forever, that something had to give. But for now, he was trapped, caught between the woman he had once loved and the new life he was building with Sophia.
Before sleep finally claimed him, Ethan made a silent promise to himself: he would find a way to end things with Emily, to let her go so she could find the happiness she deserved.
