Three months had passed since Ethan made the promise to give his marriage with Emily a chance. During that time, he continued to juggle his responsibilities as a husband with his burgeoning relationship with Sophia. The strain of living a double life was starting to wear on him, but every time he was with Sophia, it felt like all his worries melted away. Their time together was passionate, freeing, and everything he had been missing in his marriage with Emily.
One night, after a particularly passionate evening with Sophia, Ethan lay beside her, watching as the moonlight bathed her in a soft glow. She looked peaceful, her breathing steady as she rested in his arms. It was in this moment of quiet contentment that Ethan realized he couldn't keep living this way. He had to make a decision—for himself, for Emily, and Sophia.
"Sophia," he whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
She stirred slightly, turning to look at him with a sleepy smile. "Hmm?"
Ethan took a deep breath, his heart pounding with the weight of what he was about to say. "I've decided... I'm going to talk to Emily this weekend. I'm going to tell her that it's time we end things."
Sophia's eyes widened, and she sat up, fully awake now. "Ethan... are you serious?" she asked, her voice filled with a mix of hope and disbelief.
He nodded, reaching out to take her hand in his. "I am. I can't keep doing this to her, to you, or to myself. It's not fair to any of us. I've made up my mind—I'm going to talk to her and start the process of moving on."
Sophia's face broke into a wide smile, her eyes shining with joy. She leaned in, kissing him deeply. "I've been waiting to hear you say that," she murmured against his lips. "I know this isn't easy for you, but I'm here for you, Ethan. I'll wait for you, no matter how long it takes."
Ethan's heart swelled with emotion, and he pulled her into his arms, holding her close. "Thank you," he whispered. "You don't know how much that means to me."
They spent the rest of the night in each other's arms, sharing quiet moments of intimacy, savouring the connection they had built over the past few months. For the first time in a long time, Ethan felt a sense of clarity, of purpose. He knew what he needed to do, and he was ready to face it.
The weekend arrived faster than Ethan anticipated, and with it, the conversation he had been dreading. As he drove home to Emily, his mind raced with the words he needed to say, the emotions he needed to convey. But nothing could have prepared him for the reality of what he was about to do.
When he walked through the door, he was met with the familiar sight of Emily waiting for him, her smile warm and inviting. She greeted him with a kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I'm so glad you're home," she said softly. "I missed you."
Ethan forced a smile, his heart heavy with the knowledge of what he was about to do. "I missed you too," he replied, trying to keep his voice steady.
Emily took his hand and led him to the living room, where she had set up a cosy space with candles and soft music playing in the background. "I thought we could have a quiet night in," she said, her eyes shining with affection. "Just you and me."
Ethan felt a pang of guilt, but before he could say anything, Emily pulled him down onto the couch, kissing him with a tenderness that made his heartache. He wanted to push her away, to tell her the truth, but the love in her eyes made it impossible.
Instead, he gave in to the moment, allowing her to guide him into yet another intimate encounter. As they made love, Ethan's mind was filled with conflicting emotions—guilt, love, and the overwhelming desire to make things right. But with each kiss, each touch, he knew that the time had come to finally have the conversation they had both been avoiding.
Afterwards, they lay together in the quiet of the room, Emily resting her head on his chest, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his skin. Ethan took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he needed to say.
"Emily," he began softly, his voice trembling slightly.
Emily looked up at him, her expression content and relaxed. "Yes?"
Ethan hesitated, the words catching in his throat. But he knew he couldn't back out now. "I need to talk to you about something... something important."
Emily's expression shifted slightly, a hint of concern flickering in her eyes. "What is it?" she asked, sitting up slightly to face him.
Ethan sat up as well, taking her hand in his. "I know you've been trying hard these past few months," he said gently. "And I've been trying too. But... I don't think having a child will work for us."
Emily's eyes widened in shock, her grip on his hand tightening. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Ethan, it hasn't been six months yet. We agreed to give it time."
"I know," Ethan replied, his heart aching at the sight of her tears. "But I've been thinking about it a lot, and I believe you deserve someone better than me. You deserve to be a mother, to have a family, and I don't think I can give that to you."
Tears filled Emily's eyes, and she looked at him with a mix of hurt and confusion. "Ethan... is there someone else?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan's heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, he considered telling her the truth. But he couldn't bring himself to do it, not now. "No," he lied, his voice steady. "There's no one else. This is about us, about what's best for you."
Emily searched his eyes, looking for any hint of deception, but she found none. "I don't want to lose you," she whispered, her tears spilling over. "I love you, Ethan."
Ethan felt his own eyes sting with tears, and he leaned in, kissing her deeply. "I love you too," he murmured against her lips. "But we have to do what's best for you. You deserve to be happy, and I don't want to stand in the way of that."
Emily clung to him, her sobs shaking her small frame as she tried to come to terms with what he was saying. "But what about the six months?" she asked, her voice pleading. "We agreed to try."
Ethan nodded, his heart breaking at the sight of her pain. "We'll continue to try," he promised. "But if there's no news of a pregnancy by the end of the six months... then we'll sign the divorce papers. I want you to be happy, Emily, even if that means letting you go."
Emily nodded slowly, her tears still flowing as she buried her face in his chest. "I don't want to lose you," she whispered again, her voice filled with desperation.
Ethan held her close, his own tears mixing with hers. "I know," he said softly. "I don't want to lose you either. But we have to do what's best for both of us."
They stayed like that for a long time, wrapped in each other's arms, their hearts breaking at the realization that their marriage was coming to an end. But even as they clung to each other, they both knew that the decision had been made.
When the tears finally subsided, Emily looked up at Ethan, her eyes red and swollen. "We'll keep trying," she said softly. "But if it doesn't happen... then we'll do what we have to do."
Ethan nodded, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Thank you," he whispered. "I just want you to be happy."
They lay back down together, holding each other in the darkness. They had made a promise to try, but deep down, they both knew that their time together was running out. And as Ethan held Emily in his arms, he couldn't help but think of Sophia, and the new life he was about to embark on.
