The city lights flickered outside the large windows of the upscale apartment as Emily sat on the plush couch, her fingers nervously drumming against the glass of wine in her hand. Her mind was a storm of emotions—anger, jealousy, and a desperate longing that refused to fade, even after the ink had dried on the divorce papers.
The memory of her last conversation with Ethan played on a loop in her head. How he had looked at her with those sad, yet resolute eyes. How he had said they needed to do what was best for both of them. And how, despite the pain in his voice, he had chosen to move on, leaving her behind.
But Emily couldn't let go, not yet. Not when she had discovered the news that had shattered what little resolve she had left. Ethan had remarried—so soon after their divorce—and his new wife, Sophia, was already pregnant. The thought made Emily's heart clench with a mix of betrayal and anger.
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself as she picked up her phone and dialed a number she hadn't called in a while. After a few rings, the familiar voice of her old friend, Dr. Rachel Carter, came through the line.
"Emily, it's been a while," Rachel said warmly, though there was a note of concern in her voice.
"How are you holding up?"Emily hesitated for a moment, then sighed, her voice trembling as she spoke. "Rachel... I need your help. Things have been... complicated."
Rachel was silent for a moment, sensing the gravity of the situation. "What's going on, Emily?" she asked gently.
Emily took a shaky breath, the words spilling out before she could stop them. "I... I'm still seeing Ethan. We're supposed to be just friends, but it's more than that. We're... friends with benefits, I guess."
Rachel's tone became more serious. "Emily, that's dangerous territory. You're only going to hurt yourself more."
"I know," Emily admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I can't let him go. And now... now he's married again, and his wife is pregnant. It's tearing me apart."
Rachel sighed, the sound filled with sympathy and frustration. "Emily, I hate to say this, but you need to let him go. Ethan has moved on. You need to do the same."
Emily shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "I can't, Rachel. I still love him. And it's not fair. Why does she get to have everything I wanted? Why does she get to be happy while I'm left with nothing?"
Rachel's voice softened, but there was a firmness to it. "Emily, listen to me. You're only going to make things worse for yourself if you keep pursuing this. You can't change the past, and trying to hold onto Ethan will only lead to more pain."
Emily's grip on the phone tightened, her desperation bubbling over. "Rachel... there's still a chance. If... if I could get pregnant, if I could give him the child he always wanted, maybe... maybe he would come back to me."
Rachel was silent for a long moment, and when she finally spoke, her voice was filled with concern. "Emily, are you seriously considering this? Trying to trap him with a child? That's not the solution. It's manipulative, and it's not going to bring you the happiness you're looking for."
Emily's voice trembled as she replied, "I don't care, Rachel. I just want him back. I want to make her feel what I felt... the betrayal, the pain. I want her to know what it's like to lose him or have to share him."
Rachel sighed again, the sound heavy with sadness. "Emily, you're better than this. Don't let your pain turn you into someone you're not. You need to move on, for your own sake."
But Emily wasn't listening. Her mind was already made up. "Please, Rachel," she pleaded.
"You're the only one who can help me. You know the medical field better than anyone. There has to be something you can do to help me be more fertile, to increase my chances."Rachel hesitated, clearly torn between her professional ethics and her loyalty to her friend.
"Emily, I'm warning you... this path will only lead to more heartache. But if you're truly set on this... I can prescribe something that might help. But you need to understand the risks."Emily's heart skipped a beat, a glimmer of hope flickering in her chest. "Thank you, Rachel. I'll do whatever it takes."
Rachel's voice was sombre as she gave Emily the details. "I'll send you the prescription, but please... think about what you're doing. Don't let this consume you."
Emily nodded, though she knew deep down that she was already too far gone. "I will," she lied, her mind already spinning with plans.
After hanging up the phone, Emily sat in silence. She knew that what she was doing was wrong, but the thought of losing Ethan completely was too much to bear. She had to try, no matter the cost.
Over the next few weeks, Emily followed Rachel's instructions to the letter, doing everything she could to increase her chances of conceiving. She continued to see Ethan, their encounters filled with a mix of passion and desperation. Each time they were together, she clung to the hope that this would be the time, that she would finally get what she wanted.
Ethan, unaware of Emily's true intentions, continued to visit her. He told himself it was out of guilt, out of a sense of obligation to the woman he had once loved. But deep down, he knew that he was only complicating things further. He didn't love Emily anymore, not the way he loved Sophia. But the pull of their shared history, of the life they had once built together, was difficult to resist.
And so, the cycle continued—Ethan spent his days with Sophia, building their new life together, while sneaking away to Emily's bed. He told himself it was temporary, that he would stop once things had settled down. But with each visit, he found himself drawn deeper into the web of lies he had created.
Sophia, blissfully unaware of Ethan's continued involvement with Emily, focused on her pregnancy and their future together. She was excited about the life they were building, the family they would soon welcome into the world. She spent her days planning for the baby, decorating the nursery, and dreaming of the happy life they would share.
