Chapter 1 Sapphire

POV: Sapphire

I watch the rain outside the cafe window. Today has been a very gloomy day, more like a week. For the past two weeks, I've been preparing for the inevitable. You see in tomorrow, my life changes. I, Sapphire Rose Tristin will be turning 18 in tomorrow and will age out of foster care. Technically I could stay in the program for another year because I'm still in school but what good would that do me? 

I'm an orphan. I lost my mom when I was three years old. The story I was told was she got on drugs to cope with raising me alone. My father signed all of his rights away so I have no idea who he is but I plan to find out soon. My mom overdosed on cocaine and left me to fend for myself.

I was too old to be adopted. Most people want babies to be adopted instead of toddlers and kids. The older you get the more your odds go down to be adopted. Needless to say, it never happened for me.

The past year I've worked towards being able to rent an apartment for myself. About a month ago I was successful in doing this. My boyfriend, Josh Rivers' dad owns a few apartment complexes. Jack Rivers is one of the biggest real estate developers in our small town. Jack has always been nice to me. He gave me the apartment at a reasonable price. 

I've been with Josh since I was 15. On my birthday I plan to give Josh a special part of myself. He's been so sweet waiting until I'm ready. I think I'm finally ready. My best friend, Mia introduced us and thought we'd be perfect for each other. So far she's been right. 

Mia has always been there for me. She's such an amazing friend. I've been picked on and bullied all my life because I'm a little orphan Annie. How do they think I feel? I don't have a family to lean on like they do. If I screw up, it's up to me to fix it. I've been through a lot of foster parents bouncing from home to home. Some are great while others, not so much. 

Mia has stuck through it all with me. We even adopted these two puppies last year. Jack said I could keep the puppy at his house as long as I came over every day to take care of her. I named her Rusty. She's a Huskey so just imagine the personality she has. She's so friendly and loving. Now that I have my own apartment I can keep her there. Jack made sure to get me an animal-friendly apartment. 

"Saf! Sapphire!" I shake my head out of my thoughts when Mrs. Lucy calls out to me. Mrs. Lucy is a short old Korean lady who owns the cafe where I work. She gave me my first job when I was just 15 years old. "Yes, sorry, Mrs. Lucy. I was caught in my thoughts." I apologize to her. "Oh, it is ok, dear. I know your birthday is coming up soon and you're nervous about turning 18. Now, Grace has called ahead today." Mrs. Lucy says. "Ok, let me guess her usual?" I ask. Grace is our coffee addicted regular who tips really good.

Grace has a high-paying job as a band manager. She's never disclosed who her clients are due to security reasons. She's a good friend. "She's made it a double today with caramel sauce on top and two iced coffees, one black coffee and an Iced mocha latte, plus a dozen double chocolate chip muffins and croissants." Mrs. Lucy reads out the order to me. Wow, she must be having some kind of meeting or something. "Got it, let's do this," I respond beginning to put the order together. 

Mrs. Lucy handles to pastries and muffins while I make the coffee. Grace always knows what she wants. She rarely switches her order up. She's ordered this combination before so I know she has a meeting with some of her clients today. The only change Grace has ever made to her order is to switch her iced mocha with a shot of espresso with extra cold foam on top to a double espresso shot. 

Soon after Lucy and I have gotten the order completed Grace walks in. "Hey Saf, I hope my coffee is ready because I'm about to kick my client's ass." Grace complains. "Yes, it's right here." I hand the coffee to her along with the rest of her order. Before Grace can pay for her order Mia walks into the Cafe. "Grace you like churro?" Mrs. Lucy asks. She likes to try out different things at the cafe. She's been on a bit of a churro kick lately. 

"Oh, um yeah, why?" Grace asks. "I made a churro muffin. Will you try?" Mrs. Lucy asks. She presented her new muffin to me as soon as I came in for my shift. "Oh, why not? I'll take it to go and let you know how I liked it tomorrow." Grace says waving her hand. "Seriously, Mrs. Lucy you'll do a churro flavor but not pumpkin spice. It is September, might I remind you." Mia complains. "No, you want pumpkin spice, order pumpkin pie." Mrs. Lucy says. She thinks pumpkin spice is overhyped and refuses to get on that trend. 

Grace laughs, "Girl, Lucy don't play. you can take it or leave it. Bye, I got to go." Grace waves before leaving the cafe. Lucy and Mia don't really get along very well. "Sapphire tell your friend to hurry up. What do you want?" Lucy asks Mia. "One slice of pumpkin pie please and a hot chocolate." Mia rolls her eyes settling for the pumpkin pie instead. 

"I got her Lucy, don't worry about it," I say getting Mia's order. "Fine, you can go home after this. Your friend can drive you home. You should not be walking in the rain." Lucy says. "Ok, thanks." I thank her. "What the hell? She can't just volunteer me to drive you home. I mean I will but still. Girl, how the hell do you put up with her?" Mia asks as I give her, her order. I begin to clean up while Mia eats her pie. 

"Lucy isn't that bad. You two just don't mesh." I say. "Yeah, well are you still going through with your plan tomorrow with Josh? Are you sure you are ready to lose that V-card of yours?" Mia asks. "I am. I mean don't you think it's time? We've been together for three years. I'm about to be 18 so yeah I should lose it. How embarrassing would it be if I told someone I lost it when I was like 30? I can't wait for that one special moment forever." I say. Sleeping with my boyfriend at his family's hotel for my birthday isn't exactly ideal or how I pictured it but then again what would I expect? It could be worse. It could be in the back of an ally somewhere bent over a dumpster. It's not like I will ever get that fairytale romantic thing out of books for the first time. Those kinds of things never happen for me. 

I finish cleaning up and Mia finishes her pie. We walk outside under the cafe's awning shielding us from the rain. Luckily Mia has an umbrella. I wasn't expecting it to rain today so I am very unprepared for the rain. "I'll pull the car up, you just stay here," Mia says before she hurries out to get the car.

While I wait for Mia I get a text from my other friend Ella. I open it up to see what she's sent and my whole world crumbles beneath my feet. This can't be. On my old beat-up phone screen is a video of Mia and Josh in bed together without any clothes on. This can't be real. Ella sends photos one after the other under the video with a simple sorry. The photos consist of Josh and Mia kissing and all kinds of other stuff. The photos weren't just taken from one day. Josh has been cheating on me for god knows how long.

H-how could Mia do this to me? I thought she was my friend. How could Josh do this to me? I thought he loved me. I loved him. I thought he felt the same. I just stand there staring at my phone in disbelief. My heart feels so broken. Mia betrayed me and our friendship. 

A horn honks gaining my attention. I look up from my phone to see Mia waiting for me to get into the car. Do I get in? I don't know if I can stand the sight of her right now. Unfortunately, for me, there aren't a whole lot of options. I can either ride my skateboard home in the rain or I can stay dry and ride with her. It's not like I have to look at her. I don't even have to talk to her. No, if I talk to her things are going to get messy and I need time to sort my feelings out. I hop into the car and just look out the window pretending to be tired from work. What do I do now?
