Turtle POV:
I lay in bed, unmoving, staring at the blank ceiling, waiting for sleep to take me. Lightning crackled in the air, and the sound of thunder sliced through the silent air.
I hugged the spare pillow to my chest and squeezed it, turning to my side and facing the door on the other side of the room. I sighed and rolled onto my back again, the pillow still on my chest as I looked at the blank ceiling.
I flinched as another loud crack of thunder echoed through the empty house, and the bright flash of the lightning seepinginto the room.
I wonder if Kinkajou is sleeping okay...
Kinkajou and I were in an arranged marriage, both of us being 21. It was a pretty young age, but neither of us really seemed to mind. It had been a few months since the marriage, and we both agreed to only share a bed if we were both comfortable with it. For now, we were sleeping in separate beds, and rooms.
We never really spoke much, it was just the usual 'Good morning!' or 'Hey!' or 'Hi!' coming from her, being the energetic and talkative person she was. As for me...
I was honestly a pretty reserved and quiet kind of person. My mum was a powerful woman, but I had too many older brothers ahead of me to even have a chance at inheriting her role. So, I just decided to use the information and knowledge she passed onto me and my brothers to work in a business, which focuses on modern technology, such as 3D printers or teleportation devices.
The ideas are slowly forming, but we're getting there.
Since my mum was too busy gushing over my sister Anemone to spend time with us, and my dad's death when I was younger, I never really grew up with people to talk to. My brother's didn't really acknowledge my existence, and Anemone was too busy being spoiled by mum to even think about her brothers.
Because of my huge, messy family (I blame mum and dad, they get carried away), I grew up being more quiet and antisocial.
Kinkajou was the complete opposite of me, her bubbly personality managed to bring smiles to everyone's faces, even mine. She always found a way to make people laugh, or smile. She always leaps at an opportunity to make people happy or engage in a conversation with them.
I can't help but find it absolutely amazing, even attractive.
These days, I can't help but feel oddly attracted to Kinkajou, and the way her smile lights up the room. The way her hazel eyes sparkle with excitement every day, the way she hops around cheerfully and how her brown hair bounces as she runs to greet me when I come home.
When Kinkajou and I first met each other's families, I was pretty awkward with hers. Mainly because of her extremely overprotective sister, Glory. It was a pretty awkward night, but Glory seemed to approve of me. On the other hand, Kinkajou brought smiles to everyone's faces, even my cold, older brother, Quati. Auklet - my youngest sister - absolutely adored Kinkajou, and vice versa. Auklet is only 7 right now (yeah, mum and dad still have that spark), and I've never seen her this comfortable with a person before.
That's what I really love about Kinkajou.
I always find myself thinking about her at night. Especially on nights like this, I just lie awake thinking about her.
Unmoving.
Staring at the ceiling.
Awake.
I heard a gentle knock on the door as another loud thunderbolt crackled through the air.
"Who is it..?" I called out stupidly, since the only one sharing the house with me is Kinkajou.
"It's me..." Her soft voice replied through the door.
Her normally energetic and excited voice was reduced to a softer, more tired voice I wasn't used to hearing.
I sat up straight in my bed. "Come in."
She cracked the door open a bit, and I saw a small fraction of her freckled face. She opened it fully, and I saw her standing in front of my room, her hair tied in a slightly messed up ponytail. She was wearing a long, baggy t-shirt with a sleeping sloth on it and fluffy pajama pants. Her face was slightly blurry, since I wasn't wearing glasses. I got up, rubbing my eyes.
"Hey, are you okay?" I asked softly.
Kinkajou looked up to meet my eyes. "Yeah... I can't sleep..."
"Thunder?" I tilted my head to the side a bit.
Kinkajou nodded, rubbing her eyes.
"Oh, can I help..?" I placed a hand on her shoulder in an act of reasurrance.
"Yeah... Can I sleep with you tonight..?" She asked shyly.
I paused, blinking in surprise, thinking about the idea. As much as I wanted to say yes, was it really the best idea..?
I just wanted Kinkajou to be comfortable with it.
"You don't have to say yes, it's fi-"
"It's okay, you can." I smiled reasuringly, squeezing her shoulder gently.
She looked up in surprise. "Really..?"
"Yeah, if you're comfortable with it..." I scratched my neck awkwardly.
Kinkajou nodded, fidgeting with her fingers.
I smiled softly and walked over to the bed, making room for her. I shuffled to the other side of the bed, away from her, patting the space beside me where I was sleeping before. Kinkajou brightened up a bit and walked over laying on the bed. She curled up into a ball and shuffled towards me until her back was pressed against my chest. She pulled the covers up to her shoulder and pushed herself against my chest.
I felt my breath hitch a bit as she curled up against me, and I slowly wrapped my arms around her waist, resting my chin over her hair. I breathed in the subtle scent of her hair, and instinctively held her in my arms. I felt her body tense up as the sound of another crack of thunder filled the room.
"It's okay, it's just noise, it can't hurt you." I murmured softly.
Her body relaxed a bit, shuffling closer to mine. I smiled softly, closing my eyes.
"You're so warm..." She whispered.
I felt my cheeks heat up slightly and I smiled. I said nothing, and just held her close to my chest, breathing softly against her hair. I felt the steady rise and fall of her chest as her smaller body slowly relaxed, and I felt her fall asleep.
I looked at her fondly, and I wanted nothing more than to protect her at all costs. I placed a gentle kiss on her head and buried my face in her soft hair.
I slowly driften off to sleep, feeling content and at peace, with only one thought in my mind...
I'm lucky to have Kinkajou in my life.
