"Falling in love"—a phrase that captures a feeling so profound, so transformative, that it compels one to protect and cherish another with unwavering devotion. It's a sentiment I never thought I'd experience in this lifetime. Love, to me, has always been an abstract concept—something intangible, elusive, and foreign. My world revolved around study, my future, and my mother. That was my endless loop, until the day I met her.
"P'Freen!" That voice... No, it can't be. I must be too obsessed with her. Get a grip, Freen. Pull yourself together. I lightly slapped my cheeks, the soft taps a futile effort to calm the storm of thoughts in my mind.
"P'Freen!" This isn't an illusion. The voice called out again from behind, prompting me to turn around.
"Nhong Bec!?" I exclaimed as she waved and walked over to me.
"Can I sit with you?"
"Oh, yeah, sure," I replied, my voice betraying a hint of nervousness. "So... what are you doing here?"
"I... aah... oh right! There's a night market festival at XXX Park tonight, and... I wanted to invite you to go with me" she said, her cheeks turning a shade pinker.
"Pfft—sorry" I chuckled softly, unable to suppress my laughter.
"W-What's so funny! I mustered up all my courage just to ask you this!"
"So you raced to catch my bus just to invite me out? You could've just texted or called me, back then. I'd go anywhere you want, as long as it's with you" I said, chuckling as I playfully patted her head. Wait, did I just say something cringe? I just realized it now. Why is she spacing out?
"A-Anyways! I wanted to ask you in person because... I have something important to tell you" she said, her tone suddenly serious.
"You can just tell me now. Why make a fuss out of it?" I teased, watching as she puffed her cheeks and then leaned closer to me.
"B-Bec, w-what are you—" I stammered, but before I could finish my sentence, she gently inserted an earbud into my ear.
"Do you like Taylor Swift? I'm a big fan of hers. This song is great, don't you think?" she said, flashing a cheeky smile. My heart raced from the close proximity just moments ago. How can she switch topics so casually?
"And to answer your question from earlier, it's just not so romantic to do it here, hehe~" she added, her smile disarming me once again.
We sat together, the steady rumble of the bus and the soft music from the earbud creating a cozy atmosphere. I glanced at Bec, who seemed completely absorbed in the song, her eyes slowly drifting shut.
The warmth of the bus, mixed with the gentle tunes, seemed to make her drowsy. Gradually, her head leaned against my shoulder, her breathing steady and relaxed. The closeness felt comforting, and the rhythm of her breaths made me forget all the stresses and worries I'd been holding onto.
As the bus drove on, I peacefully enjoyed the breeze and this moment when I'm with her felt like time has slowed down for just the two of us.
