As Linda was finishing up some work on her laptop, her phone buzzed with a message from Alex. She unlocked the screen and smiled as she read it:

"I'll pick you up at 6 p.m. tonight. Dress up nicely."

Her heart fluttered with excitement and a touch of nerves. Alex had been so sweet and thoughtful since they started spending more time together, and she could feel herself growing closer to him with each passing day. Still, the idea of something more serious made her feel a little apprehensive. She wanted to take things slow, but she also didn't want to lose what they had.

When 6 p.m. rolled around, Linda was ready. She had chosen a simple yet elegant dress that she hoped was just the right balance of dressed-up without being too over-the-top. The doorbell rang, and she grabbed her purse, taking one last deep breath before heading to answer it.

Alex stood there, looking effortlessly handsome in a tailored suit. His eyes lit up when he saw her, and he gave her that warm smile she loved so much. "You look stunning," he said, his voice full of admiration.

"Thanks," she replied, feeling a blush creep up her cheeks. "You clean up pretty well yourself."

He offered his arm, and she took it as they headed out to his car. The drive to the restaurant was filled with light conversation, the kind that felt easy and comfortable. Alex had chosen a cozy, upscale restaurant with soft lighting and a romantic atmosphere. They were seated at a corner table with a view of the city lights twinkling outside.

As they ordered their meals, the conversation slowly shifted to more personal topics. Alex seemed a bit more serious than usual, and Linda could sense he had something on his mind. After their food arrived, he set down his fork and looked at her intently.

"Linda," he began, his tone gentle but earnest, "I've really enjoyed getting to know you these past few weeks. I think we have something special here."

Linda's heart skipped a beat, and she felt that familiar mix of excitement and anxiety. She wasn't sure what to say, so she just nodded, urging him to continue.

"I wanted to ask you," Alex said, reaching across the table to take her hand in his, "would you be my girlfriend?"

Linda's breath caught in her throat. She had anticipated this moment, but now that it was here, she felt a swirl of emotions. She liked Alex-a lot. But the idea of committing to a relationship, with all its expectations and possibilities, made her hesitant.

She looked down at their joined hands, trying to gather her thoughts. "Alex... I really like you too, but... I'm not sure. I've been hurt before, and I just don't want to rush into anything."

He squeezed her hand gently, his voice steady and reassuring. "Linda, I understand. I'm not asking for anything more than what you're ready to give. We can take things slow, at your pace. I'll be patient. I just want to be with you, no matter how long it takes."

His words eased some of her fears, and she looked up to meet his eyes. There was no pressure there, only kindness and sincerity. She could see that he meant what he said.

"Okay," she finally whispered, a small smile playing on her lips. "Let's take it slow."

Alex's face lit up with relief and happiness. "That's all I wanted to hear," he said softly, lifting her hand to his lips and pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles.

The rest of the dinner was filled with warm conversation, laughter, and a sense of deepening connection. They talked about their hopes, their fears, and the things that made them happy.

As the waiter approached with the dessert menu, Linda's eyes lit up with anticipation. Dessert was her favorite part of any meal, and tonight was no exception. She eagerly opened the menu, scanning the options with a grin on her face.
