Kenji’s worried blue eyes scanned your face, his frustration softening as he took in your puzzled expression. You could see the concern etched in his features with a touch of embarrassment, but before you could respond, a faint rumble echoed through the bathroom, followed by a soft pattering sound from outside. The rain had started, its gentle rhythm providing a soothing backdrop to the charged atmosphere. Kenji glanced toward the window, his tense shoulders relaxing slightly as he listened to the rain.
“You really don’t remember?” he asked, his voice softer now, almost pleading. But when you shook your head slowly, still confused, he let out a small sigh and took a step back, rubbing the back of his neck. His eyebrows creased as he lightly chuckled.
“Thank God, because that was embarrassing,” he whispered lowly, covering his mouth as if not wanting you to hear the words that had just exited his mouth. However, if he was trying to keep it a secret, his attempt was in vain.
“Letting a random girl crease my face as if I'm touch-starved. I must be an idiot,” he softly uttered, groaning as he fully covered his face, crouching in front of you.
“Touch-starved? Random girl? Creasing? What in the sea salt is he mumbling about?”
You stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do as he mumbled away, seeming embarrassed. Suddenly, the scent of petrichor consumed your senses, pulling your attention to the window.
Droplets of rain raced down the fogged glass, reminding you of your bubble friends you once had at your first home. Not only that, but it also reminded you of the times when Gigatron and you played in the rain back on Kaiju Island. The ice-cold showers of rain drenched your bodies as she chased you about, trying to drench your already soaked body, sliding across the slippery rocks as you both tried to splash each other with the water collected in your hands and mouth.
You smiled as you reminisced, slowly walking towards the door separating you from the raging rain. Excited yet sad, you realized you could finally play in the rain again—only this time, without the prominent figure in your life.
“I wish you were here,” you thought, stretching out your hand and grasping the cold metal handle.
“Kimora?” Kenji called after you, but you didn’t stop. The pull of the rain was too strong, beckoning you outside. You opened the door to the backyard and stepped out onto the cool, wet grass. The raindrops hit your skin, cool and refreshing, washing away some of the confusion that still clung to your thoughts.
Kenji hesitated for a moment, then followed you out into the rain. He watched as you tilted your head back, letting the rain soak your hair and run down your face. The tension that had been building in your chest started to unravel, the cold rain soothing the pain that had consumed you moments ago.
For a moment, you just stood there, letting the rain cleanse you, both inside and out. Then, as if something inside you shifted, a small smile tugged at the corners of your lips. The memories, the confusion—they were still there, but for this moment, they didn’t seem so overwhelming. The rain had a way of making everything else fade away, calming the tingling sensation the tattoos emitted.
Kenji watched as your smile grew, a look of surprise crossing his face. Then, without warning, you stretched out your arms, feeling the rain more fully, and a light laugh escaped your lips—soft, hesitant, but genuine.
“Kimora?” Kenji called out again, this time his voice lighter, less worried. You turned to look at him, your smile widening as you reached out a hand toward him, inviting him to join you. For a second, he hesitated, stepping back frantically and waving his hands.
