The morning light filtered through the curtains of Claire’s bedroom, casting a warm glow on the room. She stretched lazily, her hand instinctively resting on her belly. The events of the previous day replayed in her mind—her Instagram post, the outpouring of support, and the few negative comments that still lingered in the back of her mind. She shook her head, trying to push those thoughts aside. Today was a new day, and she was determined to focus on the positive. As Claire got ready for the day, she decided to check her Instagram again. Her post had gained even more traction overnight, with hundreds of likes and comments from people she hadn’t spoken to in ages. It was overwhelming, but also a little comforting to know that so many people were rooting for her.
Just as she was about to put her phone down, a notification popped up—Liam had posted something new. Curiosity piqued, Claire clicked on it and was surprised to see a photo of Liam holding a tiny pair of baby shoes with the caption: “Can’t wait to meet you, little one. #NewBeginnings #ExcitedDad”.
Claire’s heart skipped a beat. It was a sweet gesture, one that publicly solidified their bond and their shared journey into parenthood. She couldn’t help but smile, but the smile quickly faded as she scrolled down to the comments. Among the congratulatory messages, there were a few that made her stomach churn.
Random User: “Didn’t know Liam was the father. This is getting interesting…”
Classmate: “This whole thing feels so rushed. Are they even ready?”
Another Comment: “Isn’t he still hanging out with Samantha though? What’s going on?”
Claire felt a cold wave of anxiety wash over her. The mention of Samantha, the rumors, the doubts—it was all too much. She hadn’t spoken to Liam since yesterday, and the thought of him still being involved with Samantha gnawed at her. She had to talk to him, to clear the air, but the idea of confronting him made her stomach turn.
Before she could dwell on it any longer, her phone buzzed with a message. It was Sarah.
Sarah: “Hey, how are you feeling today? Want to meet up for brunch? We can talk and relax.”
Claire hesitated, but then she typed back, “Yeah, I could use some fresh air. See you in an hour?”
Sarah: “Perfect! Let’s meet at our usual spot.”
An hour later, Claire found herself at their favorite café, the familiar scent of freshly brewed coffee and baked pastries filling the air. Sarah was already there, sitting at their usual table by the window, a concerned look on her face as Claire approached.
“Hey, you,” Sarah greeted her, pulling her into a warm hug. “How are you holding up?”
Claire sighed as she sat down. “I’m okay, I guess. It’s just…everything feels so overwhelming.”
“I saw Liam’s post,” Sarah said gently, handing Claire a menu. “It’s sweet, but I also noticed some of the comments. People can be so cruel.”
Claire nodded, her eyes downcast. “I know. It’s just… I thought things would get easier after I shared the news, but it feels like there’s even more pressure now.”
“Have you talked to Liam about it?” Sarah asked, her tone cautious.
“Not yet,” Claire admitted. “I don’t even know what to say. I mean, what if he is still seeing Samantha? What if everything people are saying is true?”
Sarah reached across the table, placing a comforting hand on Claire’s. “You need to talk to him, Claire. You deserve to know the truth, whatever it may be.”
