- Saylor -
"Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?"
The second the words left Saylor's mouth, she wanted to grab them from the air and swallow them back down.
"I suck at pick up lines," she needlessly confessed to the gorgeous redhead across from her. The girl only smiled sympathetically and held up her left hand. Perched upon her ring finger was a silver band, encrusted with a silver diamond."I'm engaged," was all she said, before taking her drinks from the bartender. Saylor watched as the crowd of sweaty teens swallowed the beautiful girl up. She was lucky; lucky to have someone to find within that crowd. With a groan, Saylor buried her head in her hands. This was pointless. But also, why come to singles night at Sunrise Lights if you're in a relationship?
Saylor sighed, wordlessly slid a $20 bill across the counter and turned to leave the bar, only to be met by the same redhead from just before.
"My fiancé's in the bathroom," she whispered, leaning in so close her fanned against Saylor's cheek, "But I'm sure he wouldn't mind anyway,"Before Saylor could fully realise what she was doing, her lips were one with the redhead's. The kiss deepened, but no matter how desperate she was, Saylor stuck to her morals. She gently pushed the redhead away.
"I can't kiss you when there's a ring on your finger," she said, looking the girl in the eyes. "You need to sort things out," And besides, they weren't the lips Saylor wanted against hers.As the girl turned away with confusion in her eyes, Saylor felt herself crumple. Pretty girls were confusing. Life was so confusing. Doing the right thing lowkey sucked sometimes.
Outside in the cold, tears mixed with rain, and mascara mixed with foundation as it all became one sludgy mess on Saylor's skin. She wiped her eyes, as though brushing it off could brush it all off. Tomorrow all this will end, it was all she could think. Tomorrow she would be working, doing the one thing she'd always wanted more than anything. Tomorrow was when it all began.
Saylor's vision was slightly fuzzy, which made it much harder to type in her best friend's number. There was no way she was taking an Uber tonight, she hardly knew the area, and wasn't even 100% sure she was remembering her new address correctly.
"Maisie?" Saylor slurred, leaning against the brick outer wall of the bar. "I need you to pick me up,"
she heard Maisie let out a little sigh before replying.
"Where from?"
"Sunrise Lights,"
"Where?" Saylor shouldn't have assumed Maisie would know where the bar was, despite how many times she'd been there. She guessed that whenever Maisie left the bar she was too drunk to work out where she actually was.
"The bar by the airport," she said.Maisie made a clicking noise of understanding with her tongue, and Saylor heard a car door opening and the jingle of keys.
"Be there soon, Say," and Saylor could almost hear her rolling her eyes through the phone.Sometimes Saylor wished she could block Maisie out. She sure was grateful for the ride home, but could the lecture really not wait till morning?
"This is crazy behaviour," Maisie ranted. "Imagine the impression you're going to make tomorrow!"Saylor groaned, hitting her head a few times against the headrest.
"Please stop," she begged, rubbing her temples.
"Saylor Mcray," Maisie paused for effect. "The girl who was hungover for her first ever photoshoot," she paused again, "You can't keep doing this, I thought you said it'd stop in Florida. Audrey isn't here anymore, you gotta forget her,"Saylor didn't reply to her that time; for what was there to say when Maisie was right? She really had thought it would be a fresh start here, but her problems seemed to linger no matter where she was. Even if Audrey wasn't here physically, she was here in everything else. Embedded in pavements she'd never walked, at the wheel of every white car that passed by, and behind every camera Saylor had seen since arriving.
