CHAPTER 1

January 6, 2021

London

"Should we just...Kill ourselves?"

A pent up rage had been crackling in the man and he could no longer contain it under the barriers he had put up for himself. He was no longer human, only a monster wrapped in flesh. There was no point in pretending that he had any restraint - That he had any morals. He was a demon. Soulless. And so was his partner. So as she suggested the option in their secluded cabin, he couldn't help but strike her again, sending her crashing to the ground.

She groaned as she held her face but deep down she somewhat enjoyed the pain. It was a comforting feeling, one she became accustomed to, and she would have preferred to feel that over joy any day.

"Kill ourselves?" the man said. "Just shut the fuck up! This is all you fucking fault!"

The woman got up slowly from the ground, aching as she did so.

"My fault? This is both of our faults! Don't pin this on only me-"

The man scowled.

"You're a witch! I should have never met you...I should have - I should have stayed single. I never wanted a family. I never wanted that shit! I just wanted to feel...Normal."

"Normal?"

She wanted to chuckle but knew better.

"You must be having a bloody laugh! News flash - You're not fucking normal Joseph! Neither am I and that's why we got together-"

She walked over to him, grabbing his hand.

"We're the only ones who know what it's like to be us. That's why we're perfect for each other-"

KNOCK! KNOCK!

Two loud thuds echoed through the cabin. He grabbed his wife's shoulder and whispered for her to leave from the back door.

She did as she was told.

Joseph grabbed his hunting rifle and walked towards the front door. His breath had vanished. Sweat poured down his back like an open faucet and the hairs on his arm stood on end. He looked through the eyehole to see a pretty woman with bronze skin and a similarly coloured afro. From the scratched glass it was hard to tell, but it appeared as if she had been running. From something. But there was nothing out in these woods - He had just checked this morning.

"What do you want?" he said, opening the door.

His rifle was hidden behind the door frame and he had no qualms about using it on her.

"I-I need help!" the woman said. "I lost my son, he's about this height, black curly hair and he's wearing a red jacket! Have you seen him?

"No, I haven't seen him. Sorry." Joseph said.

"I just wanted to take him out for a nice trip but I've lost him. I lost my only boy...I'm such a terrible mother."

She broke into tears and crouched down to the scattered leaves. Joseph knew he should have left her alone, mind his business, but it was strange...Something in his brain couldn't stop himself from going over to her. Why? He didn't know. He was a demon. Soulless. He couldn't pretend to have a shred of humanity in him, but there he was...Crouching next to her.

"I can..."

Fuck!

"I can help you find your boy but not for too long. What's his name?"

"His name?" the woman asked.

Joseph looked at her.

"Yes, the name of your son? What is his name?" he said.

She ran her fingers through her frizzy hair and blinked rapidly.

"What's my boy's name?..."

She dug her fingers into her scalp.

"Why can't I remember my boy's name?"

I don't have fucking time for this!

Joseph grabbed the woman by the arms and tried bringing her up.

"Look, you're stressed. Let's just find your boy - He's probably playing hide and seek or something."

Despite his efforts, she wouldn't go up with him. Instead, she remained on the ground, full of scattered leaves. The leaves didn't just cover the mud and the acorns, they covered the axe. He could have never predicted it. That same cold axe is what Joseph felt, hitting the side of his skull. A fountain of blood erupted and he yelled out in pain. But there was nothing out in these woods - He had just checked this morning.

"I remember his name now." the woman called Jordan said.

"His name is Cameron Smith."
