"That was a great hunt today," purred Blossomfall, dropping two sparrows and a vole onto the fresh-kill pile. Twitching an ear in agreement, Ivypool put down her prey- a massive squirrel and two mice. "Well, it's already sunhigh. Call Mousewhisker and share this squirrel?" invited Ivypool.

Once the gray-and-white tom arrived, he tore off a leg, then with his mouth full, he mewed, "Toadstep came to the Dark Forest last night, and I was his trainer. I wonder who's next..." "I am," a voice interrupted their conversation. It was Birchfall. The light brown tom had been sharing a blackbird with Thornclaw nearby; now he looked up. "Mapleshade told me yesterday. But all the same, I think Toadstep is still getting used to the training."

Staring at the thick-furred tom, Ivypool silently agreed. He looked exhausted, his fur fluffed up to hide the scratches, and stumbled to Rosepetal, his sister. The dark cream she-cat looked worried, so Ivypool pricked her ears and leaned forward to hear what she was saying, feeling the others do the same.

"Toadstep, I'm really worried about you. Why don't you see Jayfeather? The scratches might get infected," she fretted, giving him a lick on the shoulder.

"Oops," muttered Mousewhisker guiltily. "I must have fought too hard." The fluffy tom had definitely gone off better; his ear was torn and his muzzle scratched as well as a deep bite to his hind leg and clawmarks along his spine, but otherwise he looked fine.

Toadstep, on the other hand, had a bloody nose, clawmarks on his chest, a bite to his shoulder, and a deep scratch to his side. He had also lost fur from his hindquarters. He obviously needed to shape up!

But still, Ivypool felt hopeful that the Dark Forest could win the oncoming battle.
