Hawkfrost led Ivypool to a deserted clearing with some vines encircling it. A pale glow lit the whole place up, and Ivypool caught her breath. "It's beautiful!" she breathed. "But why have you brought me here?"

For the first time since they had met, Hawkfrost's did not meet her gaze. Instead, the dark brown tabby murmured, "Ivypool...I just wanted to let you know that I'm glad that you're on our side. More happy than if any other cat announced full loyalty to us. And as for your plan, well, it's excellent, especially for our future together." Humbled, Ivypool bowed her head. "I'm also happy to hear that, Hawkfrost. But why did yo say 'our future together'-oh!" Realisation hit her and her dark blue eyes widened.

Hawkfrost smiled and wrapped his bushy tail around her shoulders, all embarrassment gone. "Mouse-brain! That took you so long to realise!" he teased, touching his nose to her ear.

Still stunned, Ivypool gradually relaxed into his soft fur and whispered, "Hawkfrost, I feel the same! You helped me when I was in the Dark Forest...and I've loved you since then." His eyes softening, Hawkfrost purred softly and the two cats touched pelts and twined tails-for a moment.

After a long while, Hawkfrost mewed, "I have to go now, Ivypool. Hollowflight and Minnowtail also have a new recruit waiting. Tommorrow night, meet me here the first thing you do. And remember- don't get caught. I'm Tigerstar's son, but no cat is favoured here."

She stood there watching, as her unofficial mate slipped away with a final glance back towards her. Breathing in the scent that still lingered, she closed her eyes, ready to wake up at last.
