the night had long fallen when he finally stirred, his brows furrowed as he breathed heavily. the sweat beads trickled down the side of his face as wei wuxian restlessly moved on the mattress, his eyes still tightly shut.wei wuxian was panicking.
lan wangji originally sat across wei wuxian's bed and played a calming melody on his guqin. as he noticed the distressed state of wei wuxian, he was immediately up on his feet and right by the panicking male who still didn't open his eyes.
wei wuxian was dreaming—no, he was having a nightmare.
❛wei ying.❜ lan wangji called but the male didn't respond. wei wuxian's body only jerked involuntarily in his place, tears leaking from the close lids of his eyes.
lan wangji's own heart picked up the pace as he watched the male with wide eyes.
he felt wei wuxian’s temperature, placing the back of his hand on the male's forehead. his body was burning hot—completely opposite to when it was before he brought him back from caiyi town.
lan wangji tried to wake up the male again, ❛wei ying.❜
he raised his voice slightly, ❛wei ying!❜
but the male didn't stir but instead let out choking sobs. his words were broken and barely made sense.
lan wangji felt his own panic rising as he witnessed the vulnerable state of his wei ying.
he needed to wake him up and so he did whatever he could do at that time.
wei wuxian felt trapped. his body was frozen, refusing to move an inch. yet, he shivered unconditionally.
tears continued to flow freely. his eyes bloodshot as he watched the chaos taking place around him.
he felt his chest tightened. he struggled to breath. he was back at the nightless city.
the war—the blood shed—the screams—it was everywhere. and he was again helpless as all the corpses went out of his control.
wei wuxian shook his head vigorously. no! he wanted to scream but felt as if his voice was taken away from him.
he forced himself to move but his legs didn't and he found himself falling over. he coughed, spurting heavy blood on the ground.
wei wuxian gasped—wake up! wake up!—he chanted in his mind. this was all a dream. he knew it. it was all a dream—it has to be.
wei wuxian struggled to get back on his feet, looking around himself. the screams muffled, the faces blurred—he felt lightheaded.
everything was too out of order. wei wuxian knew none of this was real. whatever he was experiencing at that moment, it was only a fragment of his mind that was entangled with his past trauma and fear.
he was trapped and he needed to break free through it.
wei wuxian kept repeating it to himself but he still struggled to maintain his composure to believe his own words.
he pushed himself off the ground. he screamed, forcing his voice to rip out through his throat. he did anything it took to pull himself out of this nightmare.
yet he felt like he was losing something in this process.
wei wuxian screamed even louder as slowly everything cleared; the voices, the faces—everything came back to his view.
❛a-xian.❜ wei wuxian froze. his heart beat thumping heavily against his chest as he stared at his shi-jie, who stood right across him.
she was in her white gown, tears stained cheeks as she looked at him. her hand was stretched forward, towards him, calling for him. a soft smile on her fair features.
