the night stretched long and restless. qinghe’s air carried a faint chill, slipping through the slightly open window of the inn. the dim candle on the bedside flickered weakly, its flame barely holding on, much like wei wuxian’s patience with his own thoughts.

sleep had long abandoned him.

he tossed and turned, but no matter how he moved, no matter how tightly he shut his eyes, he was still there.

lan wangji.

wei wuxian groaned, rolling onto his stomach, burying his burning face into his pillow. his fingers curled into the sheets, frustration buzzing under his skin.

lan wangji, the dignified, composed, utterly shameless second jade, was driving him absolutely insane.

a sigh of exasperation slipped from his lips before he clenched his teeth and muffled a scream into the pillow.

unfortunately, his suffering wasn’t as quiet as he thought.

❛...why are you still awake?❜

wei wuxian jolted, head snapping up in alarm.

across the room, jiang cheng sat up, rubbing his eyes, looking half-annoyed, half-exhausted. his brows furrowed, narrowing at wei wuxian’s guilty posture.

wei wuxian hesitated before clearing his throat. ❛you—why are you awake?❜

jiang cheng’s frown deepened. ❛that’s what i asked.❜

wei wuxian shifted awkwardly, sitting up properly. he ran a hand through his hair, trying to compose himself, but the heat on his face betrayed him.

jiang cheng stared at him for a long moment, taking in the restless eyes, the slight flush dusting his cheeks—then huffed, already unimpressed.

❛let me guess,❜ he muttered. ❛lan wangji?❜

wei wuxian stiffened.

jiang cheng scoffed, shaking his head.

unbelievable.

wei wuxian groaned, falling back onto the mattress dramatically. ❛a-cheng, i can’t—❜

jiang cheng rolled his eyes. ❛what? you can’t stop thinking about him? you can’t sleep because of him? you can’t function properly without his stupid face floating around in your head?❜ he shot wei wuxian a flat look. ❛congratulations. you sound like an idiot.❜

wei wuxian scowled. ❛i am an idiot. and it’s his fault.❜

jiang cheng sighed, rubbing his temples. ❛what now?❜

like i hadn't had it enough for the day already?!

wei wuxian sat up again, looking distressed. ❛he’s just… there. even when he’s not. and it’s not even that he’s doing anything—it’s just the way he looks at me, the way he—❜ wei wuxian groaned again, burying his face in his hands. ❛a-cheng, i swear, he’s doing this on purpose.❜

jiang cheng gave him a deadpan stare. ❛and you realize it now?❜ he crossed his arms, scoffing, ❛of course, lan wangji, of all people, is deliberately tormenting you by… what now? breathing? in a different fuckin' room?❜

❛yes!❜ wei wuxian pointed at him, eyes wild, clearly overlooking the sarcasm induced. ❛exactly! he breathes, and suddenly i can’t think! he exists, and suddenly i forget how to function properly!❜

jiang cheng blinks, slowly.

the fuck did i just got myself into?

jiang cheng exhaled, long and suffering. ❛i take it back. you don’t sound like an idiot. you ARE an idiot.❜
