the lake water surrounding them darkened as more ghastly pale hands darted out and latched themselves on the edges of the boats, startling the cultivators on them.wei wuxian unsheathed suibian and tried to focus ahead on the situation at hand. the inside of his palm that held the sword was sweating, making his grip slippery around the handle of the suibian.
his nervous silver eyes scanned the growing darkness of the water before they caught the sight of another ghoul appearing out from the other side of lan wangji's boat.
wei wuxian immediately yelled, ❛lan zhan, the side of your boat!❜
right on the spot, lan wangji unsheathed bichen, sending it right into the depths of the water, piercing the ghoul before it returned back to its owner.
wei wuxian sighed before something clicked in his mind. at this very moment, one of the disciples would lose his sword and later would be left stranded on the boat.
wei wuxian immediately turned around to spot the certain disciple but unfortunately, he was late.
witnessing the magnificent sword control by lan wangji, a disciple attempted to do the same thing with his own sword as well. he sent his sword inside the darkened water but unlike lan wangji, no matter what he did, he couldn't retrieve it again. even his sword summoning spell went in vain.
❛𝙨𝙪 𝙨𝙝𝙚, right now, we still haven’t determined what the thing inside the water is. why did you act on your own and make your sword go underwater?❜ an older disciple spoke from beside him.
wei wuxian looked at the disciple who, as expected, lost his sword. with the closer observation, wei wuxian realized that this was the same disciple who had earlier ‘reminded’ them about their purpose of visiting the caiyi town when they were at ornament stall.
no wonder wei wuxian found him familiar but couldn't actually remember him clearly.
su she was clearly embarrassed but still kept his expressions calm as he spoke, ❛i saw that second young master lan also…❜
he didn't finish the sentence upon realizing that how unsuitable his sentence was going to be. there was no comparison between lan wangji and any other disciple. especially, not his sword, bichen.
and so, an embarrassed shade of red seeped through his pale complexion. su she stood in silence as if he had been disgraced and glared at lan wangji with immense resentment.
‘this lan wangji— because of him i have to be embarrassed in front of everyone. i will not spare him. what does he even think about himself?!’
wei wuxian stared at the male in disbelief. it was clearly his own fault for even trying to copy lan wangji and failed. wei wuxian scoffed at the audacity of the male for blaming lan wangji for his own mistake.
he couldn't believe that he was worrying about saving him. now, wei wuxian contemplated whether to actually risk himself to save that disciple or not. the man didn't seem to be worth his efforts.
lan wangji again let his sword pierce right through the dark water but he frowned upon noticing that something was off. the water was suddenly too dark and he couldn't even see his own reflection in the darkness of the flowing water below his boat.
lan wangji shouted, ❛we must return back!❜
lan xichen questioned from beside him, ❛why?❜
lan wangji, ❛something is wrong. we must go back.❜
lan xichen didn't question further and motioned for the other disciples to row backwards towards the caiyi boat shore.
wei wuxian frowned. this was completely different. initially, they were supposed to come across the waterborne abyss but they didn't. there wasn't anything that led their boats to the center spiral in the biling lake.
