Just as dawn began to creep over the horizon, there was a loud knock at the door. Both Lena and Cassie froze, exchanging wary glances. No one ever approached Lena's lair uninvited, especially not this close to morning.
Lena moved silently toward the door, her body tensed and ready for a fight. Cassie followed close behind, her heart racing. Lena opened the door cautiously, prepared for an ambush.
But instead of the enemy, a familiar figure stood on the threshold-a tall man with blonde hair and piercing green eyes. His presence exuded power, and despite his human appearance, there was something undeniably otherworldly about him.
"Lena," the man said in a low, smooth voice. "It's been too long."
Lena narrowed her eyes. "Dominic. What are you doing here?"
Dominic stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his gaze sweeping over the room before settling on Cassie. "I heard you were in trouble," he said, his tone casual. "Thought I'd offer my assistance."
Cassie felt a shiver run down her spine at the way Dominic looked at her, as if he could see through to her very soul. Lena, however, remained unfazed. She crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, regarding Dominic with suspicion.
"You've been in hiding for years," Lena said. "Why show your face now?"
Dominic smiled faintly, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Because this time, I believe you might actually win."
Lena raised an eyebrow. "And what's in it for you?"
Dominic's smile widened. "You know me. I like to back the winning side. But more than that... I have my own reasons for wanting the Initiative brought down. Let's just say we have a shared enemy."
Cassie stepped forward, her voice steady. "Can we trust him?"
Lena glanced at her before looking back at Dominic. "Trust is a strong word. But Dominic has never betrayed me before." She turned to Dominic. "You can stay and help, but I'll be watching you."
Dominic inclined his head. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
