The deeper they delved, the more sinister the revelations became:
Experimental Data: The Sanctum and the Dravonix Initiative had been collaborating on secret experiments for years, using captured vampires as test subjects. The experiments involved everything from genetic manipulation to torturous procedures aimed at extracting and replicating vampiric abilities. The reports were gruesome-detailing vampires who had been drained of their blood, dissected, and left in agonizing states of half-life, all in the name of 'science.'
Lena's jaw clenched as she skimmed through the detailed accounts, her fury simmering just beneath the surface.
Cassie's hand trembled as she clicked on the next set of documents.
Weaponized Vampiric Abilities: One particular project, codenamed "Bloodline," sent chills down Lena's spine. With the Sanctum's backing, the Initiative had developed a serum to temporarily grant vampiric powers-strength, speed, enhanced senses-to human soldiers without full transformation. The implications were horrifying: human armies wielding vampire abilities, controlled by those who sought to destroy Lena and her kind. The bitter irony was that Lena's blood was the only known substance capable of granting such powers.
Cassie, once uneasy about using vampiric abilities, had reluctantly accepted Lena's blood. As she looked at the unfolding horrors, a pang of guilt struck her. The realization hit her like a blow: the reason Valeria and Victoria were so strong was because of Bloodline. She muttered to herself, "I'm no better than them. I've become a monster."
Lena placed a firm but gentle hand on Cassie's shoulder. "You're not a monster, Cassie," she said, her voice steady and unwavering. "The true monsters were those in the Dravonix Initiative, and now it's the Sanctum of Light. They're driven by hatred and cruelty, wielding power without a conscience. But you? You're fighting to protect what's left of our world, not to destroy it."
Cassie's eyes softened with gratitude, though the weight of her own choices still lingered. "It still feels like we're becoming what we're fighting against," she whispered, her eyes wide with disbelief.
Lena shook her head, her voice low and venomous. "No, they're trying to become the monsters they claim to hunt. They want our strength, but none of our burdens. They seek to use our power without understanding or accepting what it means."The remaining data required much more time to decrypt. So far, the files they were able to view contained enough damning information to make Lena's blood boil.
Lena's fists clenched as she stared at the screen. "They're not just hunters," she said, her voice barely above a growl. "They're playing God. And if we don't stop them, they'll destroy everything."
Cassie looked up at Lena, her face pale with fear and anger. "What do we do now?" she asked softly.
Lena's expression hardened, her resolve solidifying like steel. She had been holding back for centuries, afraid of the consequences of embracing her full power. But now, she realized there was no other choice.
"We fight," Lena said, her voice cold and unyielding. "But not like before. This time, we go on the offensive."
She hesitated for a moment, then turned to Cassie with a softer, more contemplative look. "Cassie... I haven't been entirely honest with you. There are things about me-things I've kept buried for centuries, even forgotten myself." Her gaze darkened, a fierce determination filling her eyes. "But now, it's time to reclaim what was lost."
