A Moment of Decision

The moon was high in the sky, casting silvery beams of light through the large windows of their temporary hideout. The battle against the Sanctum loomed closer, the weight of their enemies pressing in on all sides. But for the moment, the world was still, and Lena found herself sitting in the quiet space of the living room, watching Cassie as she cleaned her weapons.

Cassie had always been a fighter-brave, unyielding, and relentless. But now, Lena could see the toll their struggle was taking on her. The exhaustion behind her smile, the tension in her movements. Cassie was human, and no matter how strong she was, Lena knew that eventually, mortality would catch up with her.
The thought gnawed at Lena, digging deeper with each passing day. And now, as she watched the woman she loved preparing for war, the unspoken question finally reached the surface.
"Cassie," Lena began, her voice soft but laced with something deeper.
Cassie looked up from the pistol she was assembling, her brow furrowing slightly at Lena's tone. "Yeah?"
Lena hesitated for a moment, her mind racing with the implications of what she was about to say. But this was Cassie-if there was anyone she could be honest with, it was her.
"I've been thinking," Lena said carefully, standing up and moving closer to Cassie. "About what's coming. About us."
Cassie tilted her head, curious. "What about us?"
Lena took a deep breath, her light blue eyes locking onto Cassie's dark brown ones. "I've been trying to protect you-to keep you safe. But no matter how hard I try, I can't change the fact that you're... vulnerable. Not just to the Sanctum, but to time, to the limits of being human."
Cassie set the gun down, her gaze sharpening as she realized where Lena was going. She stood up, facing her fully now. "Lena..."
"I don't want to lose you," Lena said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't want to watch you grow old, or worse-watch you die in battle because you didn't have the strength to survive. So, I'm asking... if you'd consider letting me turn you."
Cassie stared at Lena, her heart racing as the weight of the offer settled over her. It wasn't as though she hadn't thought about it before. She had always known that being with Lena meant facing the reality of their differences-immortality for one, the frailty of life for the other. But now, confronted with the actual choice, Cassie found herself torn.
She swallowed hard, her mind racing. "You want me to become like you?" she asked, her voice quieter now. "A vampire?"
Lena nodded slowly, stepping closer, her eyes filled with both love and fear. "I want you to have a fighting chance, Cassie. I want you by my side-for as long as this war goes on, and long after. You don't have to say yes, but... I had to ask."
Cassie's gaze softened, and she reached out, taking Lena's hand in hers. She could see the vulnerability behind Lena's offer, the fear of losing her. And as much as the idea scared her, Cassie couldn't deny that a part of her was drawn to the possibility. Immortality-power-it wasn't something she had ever craved, but for Lena? For them to be together, always? That was a temptation she couldn't ignore.
But then she thought of the cost. The bloodlust, the darkness, the endless life that came with being a vampire. It wasn't just power-it was a curse, one that Lena had carried for centuries.

"I don't know," Cassie admitted, her voice shaking slightly. "I don't know if I can handle that kind of life. I'm not afraid of the fight, but... to live forever, to lose my humanity-I don't know if I can do that."
Lena squeezed her hand gently, her expression softening. "I understand," she said quietly. "It's not an easy choice. And I would never force it on you, Cassie. I love you as you are. I just-"
Cassie cut her off with a sudden, fierce kiss, pulling Lena close. When they finally broke apart, Cassie rested her forehead against Lena's, her voice a whisper in the stillness. "Give me time to think about it, okay? I love you, too, and I'm not going anywhere. But this... this is a lot."
Lena nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Take all the time you need."
They stood there for a moment, wrapped in each other's embrace, the world outside forgotten for just a little longer. The decision hung in the air between them, heavy with possibility, but for now, they let it be. They had each other-and that was enough.

For now.
