Elena wakes up from the coma a month later to see a man standing over her and she's startled, thinking it's Zack Pearson, but it's a man named Steve McGarrett who leads a task force in Hawaii. "Is this her?" He asks. "Yes. She should be out of here next week," Erin Strauss replies. Elena calms down when she hears her boss's voice in the room with her. "I'll do whatever I can to protect her and I'll have her join the task force too. You don't need to worry about anything," McGarrett says. "Thank you Commander. I appreciate it."
One month later, Elena Sonne is on a jet with Unit Chief Erin Strauss heading for Hawaii, where she will go by an assumed name and background story and will later join Five-O.
"I'm so cold and tired" Elena says.
"Well, that's what happens when you lose a lot of blood. Any idea idea on what you'll do while you're recovering?"
"I'll probably read about thirty books and I'll definitely be sleeping a lot. Do you think I'll be able to come back to the BAU?"
"I'm sorry?" Erin asks
"Do you think I'll be able to come back to the BAU?"
"Once the man responsible for your incident is arrested, I assure you, you'll be coming back."
It's a very long flight to Hawaii from D.C. Elena takes a much needed nap so her body can heal. The bullet pierced through her heart but didn't exit. Twelve hours later, they arrive in Hawaii, where Steve McGarrett is waiting for "Stephanie Briggs." When Strauss and Stephanie leave the jet, Steve is waiting along with a man standing by a car.
Stephanie hesitates while Strauss stands in front of her. "Commander, who's that man by your car?"
"His name is Detective Daniel Willams and I trust him with my life. He was in the car with me on my way here. I assure you ma'am, no harm will come to her."
Stephanie walks to McGarrett's car and Daniel is standing there with a sympathetic look on his face. "Stephanie, right? I'm Daniel. My friends call me Danny or Danno. You can sit up front. "
"Thanks Danny, but I'd rather lie down in the backseat. I'm so tired and cold."
"I have a couple extra blankets in the trunk. This my car. By the way. I don't know what Steve told you. He's a control freak."
Stephanie chuckles. "Thanks Danny. I appreciate it." Elena gets in the back and lays down and covers herself with the blankets Danny gave her. Danny gets in the car, turns around and starts talking to Stephanie. "Steve is a great guy and you're lucky to have someone like him protecting you. He was married to a really great woman named Catherine."
"Was? What happened to her?" Stephanie asks.
"Catherine and the baby both died in childbirth. Steve was devastated. He took a month off from work. Wasn't himself after they both died." Danny turns around and sighs. "Here he comes."
Steve gets in the car, turns around and immediately starts grilling Danny. "Um, any explanation as to why she's in the backseat? She could sit up front."
"She asked if she could lie down because she's tired. This is my car. Not yours."
"How long have you both been married?" Stephanie asks, giggling.
"We're not married. Danny's just annoying as always. Says I'm a control freak."
"He's not wrong. I'm mean, he says you don't let him drive his car."
"WOW!!! Really Danny?"
During their daily argument, Stephanie falls asleep. Her body is still recovering from almost dying. An hour later, Steve wakes her up and they're at his home. He offers or carry her into the house but politely declines, insisting that she can walk despite being so weak.
Steve opens the front door with a protective hand on Stephanie's shoulder and lets her walk in first while he looks around. Once settled, she looks around and sees a picture of him with Catherine.
"She's beautiful." Stephanie says.
"Who?"
"Catherine. Danny told me what happened to her and the baby. I'm so sorry Steve. He said you loved her so much. I can't imagine the pain you went through. You both looked so happy."
Steve walks over to Stephanie and looks at the picture with her. "Yeah. She was the love of my life. Both of them were. Our son's name would have been John after my father. John Steven McGarrett." He holds back tears, trying not to break down in front of Stephanie as she sets the picture back down. "I'm so sorry for your loss." She says. He looks at her and smiles. "Thank you Steph. I'll show you the house and your room then we'll have dinner. Tomorrow's a new day. You won't join the team until next month.""Stephanie smiles and replies, "Thank you Steve. I appreciate you."
