Osamu Dazai and Nakahara Chuuya are the perfect duo.
That is what every member of the Port Mafia believes. Every time there is an important issue that must be solved urgently, Mori sends the duo. Together when not in action, they have a cat and dog relationship, constantly bickering. Despite this, they share an unbelievable connection and seem to understand each other on a deep level—yet, paradoxically, they also can't fully grasp one another.
Chuuya struggles to understand Dazai's preference for solitude. As much as he understands that everyone deserves their alone time, Chuuya does not comprehend how Dazai can be in his own bubble so much without human contact. He does not comprehend how Dazai lives in a rat's box. It baffles him how Dazai can live in what feels like a self-imposed prison. He wished that he understood it so he could be together with him, so his solitude became theirs.
On the other hand, Dazai can't fathom Chuuya's loyalty. He could not comprehend how Shirase and Yuan are still so important to him even though they betrayed him. He couldn't understand how he could be loyal to Mori knowing that Mori kidnapped his friends and just uses him. In Dazai's eyes, Chuuya deserves better, and he wishes that Chuuya would just leave that shit hole where they worked.
At the moment, they were at Mori's place, waiting for him to assign their new mission. Unfortunately for both of them, Mori was running extremely late. Dazai was sprawled out on Mori's sofa, looking utterly relaxed, while Chuuya stood at attention, holding a rigid military stance. However, he decided to relax a bit and mess with Dazai.
"Why are you always on your phone, mackerel" asks Chuuya peaking at Dazai's phone
"I'm texting my friends, you wouldn't know what it is like cause you don't have any, aren't all your friends in prison?" Replies Osamu with a small smirk
"You have friends? That's a new one, I thought you didn't like to talk to other human beings"
"I don't like to talk with people with small brains like you" replies Dazai sticking his tongue out
"You know damn well I'm as smart as you or even smarter you asshole" Chuuya says and as he was going to punch him Dazai deviated
"You wish, the only thing you know how to do is punching people and being a stupid slug"
"Shut the fuck up, oh my god you're so annoying, I don't even know why Mori likes you so much." Sighs Chuuya
"Maybe because I'm his best employee, slug"
"Oh my —"
Nakahara wasn't able to finish his sentence as the door opens suddenly and a singing starts.
"Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you,..." at least 20 people enter Mori's room singing "Happy Birthday to you" and Chuuya couldn't be more confused
Was it Dazai's birthday? Why didn't he know? Well, he knew why he didn't know, he didn't know because Dazai and him weren't friends.
He quickly just started singing too but when he looked at Dazai, Dazai seemed so annoyed. The party continued during the afternoon and when Chuuya was able to find Kouyou he asked her why they hadn't told him the plan.
"You and Dazai are best friends aren't you, we were afraid that if we told you, you would tell him, besides, this was Elise's idea. She wanted a party and so Mori gave her one" Kouyou tells him
"I couldn't even buy him a gift, I didn't even know that it was his birthday"
"I think the biggest gift you can give him is your company if you want my opinion"
Chuuya phone bips.

Chuuya quickly rushed over to Dazai and began pulling him up by the arm.
"I bet you're hating this. Let's go to my place and play video games."
"You're not even going to ask if I want to go with you? I'm pretty sure this is kidnapping," Dazai teased, a hint of amusement in his voice.
"I'm sure you'd rather play Mario Kart than hang around at this boring party," Chuuya retorted, not even glancing back at Dazai as he led him toward his apartment.
Before heading to Chuuya's place, they stopped at a grocery store to stock up on candies and popcorn. Later, they settled onto Chuuya's sofa, controllers in hand, and played Mario Kart for five hours straight, ignoring all their responsibilities and just having fun like the teenagers they were.
"Did you have a good day?" Chuuya asked after a particularly intense race.
"Well, it could've been better," Dazai replied, a bit of a sigh escaping him.
"You got a party, tons of fun, and spent time with the only person your age that you know. How could it have been better?" Chuuya said, trying to lighten the mood.
"It's not something you or anyone else can fix. I wanted to talk to a friend, but he said he was busy and couldn't chat. I get it—he's got work to do—but I still would've liked to talk to him."
Chuuya felt a sharp pang in his chest, as if Dazai had just stabbed him in the heart. Once again, he was the second choice. Not that he thought he was Dazai's favorite person, but he had hoped he was. Clearly, he was wrong.
"I'm sure you're as important to him as he is to you, so don't worry. He'll text back tomorrow, I'm sure of it," Chuuya replied, trying to mask the hurt in his voice.
