As soon as I entered the tunnels, I could hear Elena arguing with my mom, trying to convince her that Damon and Stefan didn’t deserve to die. But Mason had her restrained, and I could feel the tension thick in the air.

"They’re monsters, Elena," my mom’s voice was cold and firm. "They need to die. They’re vampires."

That’s when I vamped in, faster than anyone could react. "Who else is with you, Elena?" my mom demanded, her eyes scanning the darkness. Elena stayed quiet, but she didn’t need to answer.

I didn’t give her time to react. In a blur, I bit the first officer, draining enough blood to knock him unconscious before turning to the second and doing the same. I moved so quickly, my mom didn’t even realize what was happening until it was too late. She grabbed her gun, aiming blindly, ready to shoot the vampire attacking her officers, not knowing it was me.

But I wasn’t about to let that happen. I vamped towards Mason next, biting him hard enough to take him down too. His blood was bitter in my mouth, but I drank until he was unconscious, just like the others. When it was over, I stood there, blood on my lips, and turned to my mom, revealing myself.

"Hi, Mommy," I said quietly.

The look on her face was worse than I imagined. Her expression shattered, her eyes wide with disbelief. She dropped the gun, her hands trembling as she took a step back. "No," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You can’t be one of them. I couldn’t protect you."

My heart ached at the pain in her voice. "Mom, you don’t know everything," I said, keeping my voice steady, even though it felt like I was breaking inside. "I’m still me. Your officers, Uncle Mason, they’re still alive. Just unconscious."

She didn’t respond. She just sat down, staring blankly at the ground, like she didn’t know how to process what was happening.

Elena spoke up next. "Caroline, can you help? Stefan and Damon have bullets in them."

I nodded, glancing at my mom one last time before walking over to Stefan and Damon. I knelt beside Stefan first, gently removing the bullets from his body, then moved to Damon, doing the same. Damon stood up almost instantly, brushing off his clothes like nothing had happened.

He locked eyes with my mom, his face hardening. "So, what are we going to do with you, Sheriff?" he asked, his voice laced with sarcasm and malice.

I vamped in front of him, standing between him and my mom. "We’re not killing her, Damon," I said firmly.

Stefan, still weak but standing, added, "Damon, no."

Damon raised his hands in mock surrender. "Relax, I’m not going to kill my friend, although your mom nearly killed my brother." His gaze shifted back to me. "Blondie, Stefan needs some blood. Human blood."

Elena and Stefan both spoke at once. "No, Damon!"

But I wasn’t about to let Stefan go without feeding. "I’ll get him some animals to feed on," I said, stepping back. "And Damon, don’t you dare harm my mom while I’m gone. You can compel the officers—they’re not on vervain. As for Uncle Mason, I don’t care what you do with him."

Damon smirked. "Don’t worry about him, Caroline. I’ll handle Mason."

With that, I left the tunnels to find animals for Stefan to feed on. I couldn’t believe the chaos of the day, but all I could think about was keeping my mom safe. After a few minutes, I returned with a couple of animals, and Stefan fed on them quickly, regaining his strength. Elena helped him up, and they headed back to the Salvatore Boarding House, leaving me to deal with the aftermath.

Damon had already compelled the two officers. They wandered off, none the wiser to what had happened. He kept Mason hostage, as I expected, and took my mom to the Salvatore Boarding House for the next few days. He wanted her vervain-free so he could compel her, wipe all this from her memory.

Once everything was settled, I went back to the picnic, gathering my things. But I wasn’t done yet. I went home, packing up all of my mom’s essentials, everything I thought she might need. Clothes, toiletries, the little things she used every day. I didn’t know what would happen next, but I needed to be prepared.

After that I leave to go to Salvatore boarding house.
