After a day
The day had already started off heavy, and when Stefan came to see me, I could tell something was really wrong. His face was tight with tension, and I braced myself for whatever bad news was coming.
“Elena did something reckless,” he began, not bothering to ease into it. “She gave her blood to Esther. Esther was going to use it to link all the Original vampires and kill them, using the Bennett bloodline.”
“What?!” I could barely comprehend it. My mind raced, trying to piece it together. Elena? The Bennett bloodline? Esther?
“She wanted to sever the Original family’s connection by using Bonnie, her mom, and the entire Bennett bloodline to perform the spell,” Stefan continued. “But we failed. Elijah found out and captured Elena. He demanded Damon and I stop Esther… and the only way to stop her was to sever the Bennett bloodline.”
I felt my heart drop. “Stefan, what did you do?”
Stefan didn’t look at me. “Damon turned Bonnie’s mom into a vampire. That was the only way.”
I gasped. “Oh my God.”
He sighed, clearly haunted by what had happened. “I wish there was another way. I wish we had a weapon to kill Klaus, to end all of this.”
That was it. I couldn’t listen to this anymore. “Enough, Stefan,” I snapped, standing up. “Don’t let Klaus cloud your judgment. He isn’t worth it.”
But Stefan shook his head, his face set with the same stubborn determination I’d seen countless times before. “No, I can’t. He’s taken so much from me.”
I reached out, trying to get through to him. “We’re still here, Stefan. With you. We’re still your friends, and we haven’t left.”
He looked at me, his expression torn, but I could see it—the darkness was winning. “It’s not the same, Caroline,” he whispered, before turning and walking away, leaving me standing there with a sinking feeling in my chest.
Later, I decided to stop by the Grill before heading to school. I needed to clear my head, but what I overheard only made things worse. Elena, of course. She was telling Bonnie about how she almost made out with Damon. My blood boiled. Stefan was spiraling, losing himself in his war against Klaus, and Elena was just… stringing them both along like they were toys. It made me sick.
I didn’t even bother confronting her. I couldn’t deal with her right now. I slipped out of the Grill as quietly as I could, heading straight to school, needing to get away from all the drama. But of course, more drama was waiting for me.
Rebekah was throwing a tantrum about the 1920s decade dance, demanding we organize it because Klaus had taken the chance away from her last time. She was being her usual demanding self, but honestly? I was too tired to argue. “Fine, Rebekah,” I said half-heartedly. “We’ll do the dance.”
I’d barely agreed when, of course, Elena showed up, looking like she wanted to play the victim again. She approached me like she was ready for another round of emotional manipulation, but I wasn’t having it. Not today.
“Why are you so worried about going to the dance with Stefan?” I asked, my voice sharp. “Oh, I know why. It’s because you almost made out with Damon.”
Elena’s face went white with shock. She looked at me like I’d just slapped her. “Caroline…”
I didn’t give her a chance to protest. “You were telling Bonnie about it at the Grill. Where anyone could hear. Stop stringing both of them along, Elena. Make a choice and stick to it.”
She looked stunned, like she couldn’t believe I’d called her out. But I was done holding back. I was done watching her play with their hearts like it was some game. Without waiting for her response, I turned and walked away, heading off to oversee the preparations for the dance.
I could feel Elena’s eyes burning into my back, but I didn’t care. Someone had to say it. I just hoped, for Stefan’s sake, that she finally made a decision before it was too late.
